As they do every year, Southborough officials use the actual holiday — November 11th — to honor resident veterans (living and passed). The public is invited to take part in the Town’s observances marking the day.
I’m sharing those details, plus what is open and closed when next week in observance
In honor of Veterans Day, the Transfer Station and the Southborough Library will be closed on Saturday, November 11th.
The Library will also be closed the day prior (Friday, November 10th) as will the Southborough Senior Center and most Town offices. The exception is the Town Clerk’s office which will be open until 5:00 pm on November 10th. (That is because it is the nomination paper filing deadline for state committee members.)
Following tradition, the Veterans Day ceremony is held at the All Wars Memorial on the Common. It is preceded by a parade from the the American Legion & VFW Post Headquarters (at the Community House).
The parade is comprised of veterans, representatives from the Select Board and town scouts. (Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts are all invited to march.)*
The parade participants begin gathering at 10:15 am. The procession starts at 10:45 am.
The community joins them at the Town Common for the ceremony beginning at 11:00 am to honor our country’s veterans and service members. (That’s the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.) The 30-40 minute event remembers our fallen and honors those who serve today and all those who have served our nation. It includes readings and patriotic music, gun salutes, and the playing of Taps.
*It will be a busy day for scouts who are also using the day to pickup and sort donations for the town-wide collection for the Southborough Food Pantry — Scouting for Food. So as not to conflict with the ceremony, organizers won’t begin accepting dropped off items at the church until noon.
Updated (11/7/24 4:38 pm): The correct address for the the American Legion & VFW Post headquarters is 28 Main Street.
