NSMA is raising funds by selling Candygrams to deliver to performers and crew of the high school's musical next week.

Next week, Algonquin students will perform as America’s favorite “creepy” family in the musical “The Addams Family – School Edition”.

The Northborough-Southborough Music Association asked me to promote their “Performance Night Candygrams”.

It’s worth noting that the school is apparently going “cashless”, so pre-purchasing both tickets and Candygrams online is encouraged. [Note: Details have changed to be more food-allergy friendly.]*

Below are details on the production and the NSMA fundraiser.

The Musical

The play will run at 7:00 pm for four nights — Thursday, November 16th through Saturday the 18th.

Most readers will be familiar with the kooky characters in some form: the original New Yorker cartoons, the syndicated sitcom from the 60s, the 90s movies, or the recent Netflix series “Wednesday”.

The musical is a school-friendly version of a Broadway play from 2010. The premise: Gomez is horrified when his grown up daughter Wednesday confides that she has fallen in love with a “normal” boyfriend.

An article in the school’s paper, The Harbinger, quotes the production’s director Brian Kelly as describing why the story is “very timely”:

It’s very much about being who you are… everyone can live together in a judge-free zone, even though it’s cloaked in comedy

Lead roles will be played by:

  • Gomez Addams — junior Jax Jackson
  • Morticia Addams — junior Lydia Reineke
  • Uncle Fester — sophomore Emily Ruiz
  • Wednesday — sophomore Ava Guckian
  • Pugsley Addams — sophomore Tylia Moran

The Harbinger article also covers the extensive coaching and preparation involved in for students to take on such well-known and unique characters. You can read about that here.

Tickets are $15 per adult and $10 per student.

Since the school is going “cashless”, pre-purchasing before you get there is the best bet. (But seats don’t appear to be assigned, so you’ll still want to show up early enough to get good ones!)

NSMA’s Candygrams

The Candygrams* are $5 each and will be delivered with a “short message” from you.

There are a whole lot more students than the five leads you can send sweet congrats/good luck notes to. The fall musical is the school’s biggest annual production with a large backup cast, stage & technical crew, and orchestra pit.

NSMA Candygrams for The Addams Family promoNSMA is promoting:

If you’d like to send some encouragement to any of the performers, members of the pit orchestra, or tech crew, please consider pre-purchase of a Candygram to be delivered on one of the three performance nights! Online orders are accepted until the midnight before each performance night.

The sign up page specifies that proceeds go to NSMA “which supports music education in the Northborough Southborough school district.”

*Updated (11/10/23 2:40 pm): The order form for Candygrams has been updated to state, “Candy used will be peanut, tree nut, and gluten free”. It will also allow people fill in “if there any known food allergies beyond these considerations”.
