Southborough will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony tomorrow, honoring resident veterans (living and passed). The public is invited to take part in the Town’s observances.
I’m sharing those details, plus what is open and closed today and tomorrow in observance.
Town Hours
Today, Friday, November 10th, Town offices, the Southborough Library, and the Southborough Senior Center are closed. The exceptions are:
- The Town Clerk’s office (open until 5:00 pm due to a nomination paper filing deadline for state committee members.)
- The Transfer Station
On Saturday, November 11th, the Transfer Station and the Southborough Library will be closed.
Official Ceremony
Following tradition, Southborough’s Veterans Day ceremony is held at the All Wars Memorial on the Common. It is preceded by a parade from the the American Legion & VFW Post Headquarters (at the Community House).
The parade is comprised of veterans, representatives from the Select Board and town scouts. (Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts are all invited to march.)*
The parade participants begin gathering at 10:15 am. The short procession to the memorial starts at 10:45 am.
The community joins them at the Town Common for the ceremony beginning at 11:00 am to honor our country’s veterans and service members. (That’s the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.) The 30-40 minute event remembers our fallen and honors those who serve today and all those who have served our nation. It includes readings and patriotic music, gun salutes, and the playing of Taps.
*It will be a busy day for scouts who are also using the day to pickup and sort donations for the town-wide collection for the Southborough Food Pantry — Scouting for Food. So as not to conflict with the ceremony, organizers won’t begin accepting dropped off items at the church until noon.
Updated (11/7/24 4:38 pm): The correct address for the the American Legion & VFW Post headquarters is 28 Main Street.
