The week in sports

I have the latest results in Algonquin sports, this week’s schedule, and more on a story I shared two weeks ago on a big team reunion.

Earlier this month, I shared photos the school tweeted from a 50 year reunion celebrated by Algonquin’s Class of 1974’s Super Bowl winning Football team. Over the weekend, the Community Advocate posted a story with interviews and photo highlights.

The event was coordinated by former half back Lee Heffernan, who told the paper:

When Southborough and Northborough came together, we came together as one football team. I mean, look at us. We’ve stayed together. We love each other. We played multiple sports with each other. We went from age 14 to 18, formative years, and did a lot of stuff. We have great families, great teachers, and great coaches that have helped us.

That’s just one of the highlights in their coverage of the undefeated team and their reunion. It’s a great read, and you can find it here.

Speaking of undefeated, ARHS’ varsity teams for classic team sports won’t earn that moniker this winter. However, at least three of the school’s teams that rely more on achievements of individual members still have a shot.

Gonk Basketball and Ice Hockey teams have had an uneven season start.

ARHS Girls Basketball followed up their opening win with two losses last week to Marlborough (54-31) and Nashoba (42-17), lowering their record to 1-2. Boys Basketball improved their record to 1-1 by winning their first home game of the season last Tuesday. They beat Marlborough 55-49

Gonk Boys Hockey entered the season by playing in the Borough’s Cup last week. They lost the first round to Wachusett (2-1) but beat Westborough (8-1) in the consolation game. Titans Girls Hockey won their first game to Franklin (5-1) but lost to Longmeadow (6-2).

Meanwhile, ARHS Swim teams are at 2-0 after beating Nashoba in their second official meet of the season on Wednesday. The Girls won 76-62 and the Boys 123-15.

Scores haven’t been posted, but I got confirmation that Titans Gymnastics beat Marlborough in their first competition of the season. Below are some photo highlights from the home meet courtesy of Owen Jones Photography:

While ARHS Indoor Track has been posting individual members’ times on their team pages, team results haven’t been posted (or tweeted) yet for recent meets and competitions. Wrestling’s latest meet results also weren’t posted, but the team already had a loss the prior week. And the ski team’s season isn’t underway yet.
