Updated (1/9/23 4:59 pm): A statement from the school indicates that a student came forward and although the search continued, it was concluded after nothing more was found
The school issued the following statement to me early this afternoon:
On Monday, January 8, two 20-gauge ammunition shells were found in a trash barrel in a residence hall on the St. Mark’s campus. On Monday evening, an organized search of the residence hall was completed, and no additional items connected to the shells were discovered.
This morning, the Southborough Police Department recommended a K-9 search of campus to check for any items related to the ammunition. After the search was announced to members of our community, a student came forward to report that the ammunition shells belonged to him. On the advice of the Southborough Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police, the residence hall was searched by the K-9 unit as planned. No weapons or other items related to the ammunition were found, and on the recommendation of local and state police officers, the search was then concluded.
Channel 5 News has reported today that State Police were called in after two shotgun shells were found at St Mark’s School.
For anyone unfamiliar, St Mark’s is a private boarding/prep school in Southborough, founded in 1865. According to WCVB’s report:
Southborough police requested assistance from a state police K9 unit after the discovery, state police spokesperson Dave Procopio said. A K9 and ballistics detection dog were sent to the school.
The two 20 gauge No. 6 shells were found in the school, Procopio said. His statement did not specify where on the campus they were discovered.
They didn’t have more details on the website, but did have video here.
*My Apologies for delay in sharing St. Mark’s statement (I got tied up and missed it!)
Updated (1/10/23 9:30 am): Yesterday, the Southborough Police also issued a press release, which reinforces details in the school’s statement. You can see that here.
