The week in sports

Algonquin Indoor Track had a great showing at a state competition over the weekend. But the best news about Algonquin sports last week was the Telegram’s coverage of a Titan athlete’s success in a fall sport — a junior who will be playing for the National Field Hockey team. Here are highlights from last week’s competitions and sports news and what’s on tap this week in high school sports. .

The Telegram shared the news last week that an Algonquin junior, Lindsey Brown, was one of three area athletes selected to play for the US National Field Hockey team:

The Telegram wrote:

Lindsey Brown was sitting inside the living room of her Boylston home Dec. 7 when the Algonquin Regional junior found out she had been selected to the U-18 Women’s National Team for field hockey.  . .

A center-midfielder and co-captain at Algonquin, Brown scored 22 goals and dished out five assists to earn Mid-Wach A all-star honors last fall.

The Northwestern University commit will enter her senior season as the fifth all-time leading scorer in Algonquin field hockey history.

As for winter sports, ARHS Boys and Girls Indoor Track teams came in third place overall at the Division 2 State Relays, and both teams won the Distance Medley Relays.  In the High Jump Relay, Boys members Miles Lipka came in first and Max Brown third. The team also finished third in the 1600 Sprint Medley and Long Jump Relay, and the Girls team finished #3 for both the 4×50 Yard and 4×50 Yard Shuttle Hurdle.

Bay State Running caught up with the Girls’ DMR winners: Olivia Guckian, Mackenzie Clark, and Shelia & Brigid Purcell. (You can see that interview below.)

For the Boys, Kudos go to Stephen White, Yates Campbell, Joseph Lamburn, and Christopher Kardos. You can see the full results from the competition here.

In a three way meet on Friday, Algonquin Gymnastics won 1st place. The Titans scored 136.95, beating both Shrewsbury (135.4) and Westborough (133.45).

Boys Swimming remains undefeated. Last week they beat Grafton 99-49Girls Swimming lost the meet 96-72. Their record is 3-4.

Both Ice Hockey teams are on track to compete in the Division 2 playoffs this winter. Boys Ice Hockey beat North Middlesex 4-2 last week, but lost to Concord-Carlisle 5-1 on Saturday. As of the day prior, they were ranked #17 for D2. Their current record is 6-4-2. Girls Ice Hockey tied Westford Academy 4-4. Prior to the tie, they had slipped one spot in the rankings to #11. They now stand at 5-4-1.

Gonk Basketball teams aren’t doing nearly as well, and losses last week pushed them further away from the playoff threshold of the top 32 Division 1 teams. Girls Basketball lost to Nashoba 53-33. They are ranked 39, with at 4-6 record. Boys Basketball lost to St. Paul (65-60) and Fitchburg (71-58) They are now at 3-8 and ranked 44.

No results were available for ARHS Wrestling or Ski.
