Northborough-Southborough Public Schools have been emphasizing the importance of reading this year by trying to engage families. In the fall, families were encouraged to take part in monthly reading challenges throughout this school year.
In two weeks, the schools will host a celebration of that effort. You don’t have to have been taking part to join them. Families with students in the schools are encouraged to join the party “to celebrate reading, books, and community”.
If you have an NSBORO student (or are one), mark your calendar for Tuesday, February 6th. The party will take place in the Algonquin Regional High School Library from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
School librarians invite:
We hope you will join us in bringing together members of our ten school communities as one district to celebrate, support, and develop our students‘ love of reading.
The event is promoted as including:
- Photo Booth
- Games
- Mystery Readers
- Raffles
- and Crafts
If you do plan to attend, you are encouraged to RSVP here.
You may see a number of attendees sporting an NSBORO READS shirt at the event (designed by ARHS junior Ela Or). Families were offered the opportunity to buy them through January 19th. (Sorry, I missed sharing the news before the deadline!)
In the October 3rd district newsletter, Superintendent Gregory Martineau shared news that school librarians had launched the school year reading challenge. Each month offers a different theme for a book to read. Students and family members are then invited to log the reading through Google Docs.
In last week’s newsletter, he followed up with the celebration invite, explaining:
This fun-filled, student-friendly event has been designed to recognize the reading students and community members have done so far and to encourage continued participation in this year’s challenge.
If you haven’t been taking part in the challenge, there’s still time. Themes this month through the end of the year are:
- January — Read an award winning book.
- February — Read a book set in, or about, a place you’d like to visit.
- March — Read a book about someone whose culture or experience is not like yours.
- April — Read a poetry collection, rhyming book, or novel in verse.
- May — Read a graphic novel.
