In a final update on the Algonquin winter sports season, Girls Hockey and Girls and Boys Indoor Track conclude their respective seasons.
On Saturday evening, in the semifinal game, the Girls Hockey team was defeated by the number one seed, the Duxbury Dragons. Sophomore Ariya Tice fought hard in the first period, capitalizing off of a rebound to secure the goal that brought Algonquin into the lead.
However, the momentum was short lived with Duxbury’s Addy Harrington scoring to start off the second period. By the time the game ended, they had triumphed over the Titans 3-1.
The physicality and aggression of the game was obvious due to the sheer number of penalties. This aspect worked against the Titans as they often had to play down a player.
In a postgame interview with Community Advocate, Algonquin Head Coach Tina Beauchemin said, “Unfortunately there were a lot of penalties…Everybody’s sad. I get it, it’s a moment, but they have to be proud of the accomplishments we did have. Nobody expected us to be where we were today.”
Building on their hardwork and determination, at Nationals the Boys and Girls Indoor Track and Field Teams concluded a strong season with new school records and some incredible performances.
Notably, the Girls 4 by 200 meter relay team (composed of junior Arianna Gentile and seniors Olivia LaBelle, Audrey Helwig, and Mackenzie Clark) garnered a 30th place finish this Friday. Furthermore, the team has set a new school record of 1:44.77 and are state champions.
In the Freshman 800 meter race, Tanvi Mehta ran a 2:22, coming in 23rd overall. She continued to make her mark alongside seniors Brigid Purcell, Sheila Purcell, and Olivia Guckian in the Girls 4 by 1 mile relay, where they achieved 27th place.
One of the most impressive results was the Boys 4 by 1 mile relay, coming in 22nd overall. Junior Jonah Gould and seniors Joseph Lamburn, Christopher Kardos, and Stephen White finished with a time of 18:09.22.
After all of these accomplishments, the track team will continue forward into the spring season with an amazing group of athletes.
Outdoor Track and other ARHS Spring sports won’t begin competing until early April. But you can start looking for pre-season scrimmages by Lacrosse, Baseball and Softball at the end of this month.
