I promised to keep readers updated on the Town election. There is another potential race brewing. And it is worth noting that some incumbents aren’t running for re-election this spring.
(That means that if you decide to throw your hat in the ring, you wouldn’t have to run against someone already in the seat.)
Today, two candidates pulled papers for one elected seat on the Housing Authority — incumbent Nancy Morris and Bea Ginga.
For the Southborough School Committee, Laura Kaufman and Kaitlyn Stickney both pulled papers this week. There will be two seats on the ballot, and incumbent Kamali O’Meally has confirmed that she isn’t running for re-election. Jennifer Primack, the other incumbent, is still deciding.
Earlier today, Johanna Sheyner pulled papers to run for a Southborough seat on the Northborough-Southborough Regional School Committee.
Incumbent Cathy Kea confirmed to me tonight that isn’t running. With her youngest about to graduate college, she feels, “it is time to pass the torch to a parent of a younger student.” (Incumbent Kathleen Harragan is also running, but there are two seats on the ballot.)
On the Board of Trustees for the Southborough Library, Mary Tinti has pulled papers for a seat that I’ve been told Kim Regan won’t be running to hold onto. (Incumbent David Ekberg is also running, but, again here, there are two seats on the ballot.)
Anyone interested in running can still pull papers through Friday, March 22nd. The deadline for filing signed nomination papers is 5:00 pm on Tuesday, March 26th.*
For the Town Clerk’s website where he updates daily the list of who has pulled papers so far, and other election details, click here. (For a reminder of who currently holds the offices, click here.)
As I previously covered both current Chair Andrew Dennington and Capital Improvement & Planning Committee member Joseph Palmer have filed papers.
Stay tuned for details on Candidate’s Night which the Library Board of Trustees will again be hosting this spring.
*Filed papers must have valid signatures from 48 registered Southborough voters. (The Town Clerk’s office generally advises to get at least 60, in case there is an issue with any names/addresses not matching the registration list.) Once papers are filed, candidates still have until April 11th to reverse their decision and take their names off the ballot — which has previously happened.
Updated (3/13/24 9:26 pm): Initially, I wrote that the Select Board race was still the only contest. I just learned that I missed the Housing Authority race when I looked at the updated list posted this evening.
Updated (3/18/24 12:54 pm): I initially had the wrong date of the week for the deadline to file signed nomination papers.
