It’s the time of year when leagues promote their upcoming seasons. Those are usually for youth. But this year, multiple opportunities for adults promoted by Southborough Recreation, in addition to sports classes and programs they offer.

The sports cover Basketball, Softball, Pickleball, & Beach Tennis. Plus, I’m sharing info again on an area Senior League.*

Pickup Basketball League

Adult Basketball League (I edited the 2022 flyer to show this year's details from the website)The 3rd session of Recreation’s Adult Basketball League for ages 18+ will start on April 3rd and run through June 5th (except for April 17th). Players get together for pickup games twice weekly – calling their own fouls and keeping their own scores.

Games are held from 6:30 – 8:30 pm (Sundays at Fay School and Wednesdays at Trottier Middle School).

Participation costs $60 and covers the 19 games, but attendance doesn’t need to be regular. Click here to register.

Softball Leagues

Women’s Recreation Slow Pitch Softball League

Women's Slow Pitch Softball LeagueSouthborough will field two 13 player teams to compete with teams from Northborough, Westborough, Grafton, and Hudson. (Games will be held at each town except Grafton.)

This league is not super competitive, but if you sign up, you must have some experience playing. . .

10 players on the field. Everyone bats. Players will be responsible for bringing their own gloves.

The season runs April 28th through June 9th and costs $100 to join (team t-shirts included). For details and to register, click here.

Southborough Men’s Softball League

Men's Softball LeagueI reached out and was told that the details for the Men’s league (for ages 18-88) are the same as last year. At that time, I was told that it’s a fairly informal league. There’s no registration for individual players, just for the teams, which play one or two games per week. Play takes place weeknights at Woodward School, starting in May.

EMASS Senior Softball League

This regional slow pitch league is for adults ages 50+. The league kicks off play in April with playoffs completed by October 1st. Its website touts:

EMASS is a vibrant community of more than 400 members who love softball and compete in a spirited, sportsmanlike manner. Our players range in age from 50 to 80-plus and play in four weekday and two Saturday divisions of different age groups and skill levels. No matter your ability, you will find a spot in one or more of our six divisions. We have paid umpires and we play on well-groomed fields in Framingham, Medfield and Wayland.

FAQs clarify the league is mostly men but would welcome more women to join.

Pickleball options

For those who want to learn or improve their skills this spring, Rec is offering classes. And for those who already have advanced skills, the Town is promoting a new league.

Advanced Pickleball Ladder League

Pickleball Advanced Ladder LeaguePlayers will be scheduled for moderated, mixed gender Round Robin play on Friday evenings from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at the Richardson Courts at Neary School. Pickleball Lessons

This instructional program is:

for athletes new to the sport or just beginning. Led by an instructor, learn the game’s rules, techniques and skills and join your community on the courts! Our curriculum will begin with the basics and end with participants playing full games against each other.

Three classes were offered, but the evening option is already full. Morning classes are still available on Tuesday mornings from 10:00 – 11:00 am or Wednesdays 10:00 – 11:30 am.

The classes are at the Mooney Courts at Finn School. Sessions run from April 2nd or 3rd to May 7th or 8th and cost $90. To register, click here.

Beach Tennis

Rec promotes the opportunity to:

Dive into a new sport on the sand! Beach Tennis is an engaging sport that originated in Italy in 1978 and, recently, it has become all the rage across the world. It seamlessly merges the strategies of tennis and badminton and is played on sandy courts that add an extra element of challenge and enjoyment. In these six-week sessions, discover the joy of playing with our expert instructors from Boston Beach Tennis — the forefront of introducing this exciting sport to Massachusetts!

Rec is offering both a spring and summer session. The spring session is on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 – 7:00 pm, April 16th through May 21st. Summer is on Thursday evenings from June 6th through July 18th (except for July 4th).

Each 6 week session will be held on sand volleyball court at Neary School and costs $150. Click here to register.

*For those interested in senior options, the Southborough Senior Center also offers regular fitness classes. You can read about those on page 7 of in their newsletter here.
