NEF Trivia Night – April 5

The group that provides grants to Northborough schools (including Algonquin) is holding Team Trivia night fundraiser next week

The community is invited to participate in a Team Trivia Night fundraiser a week from Friday.

Organizers of the Northborough Education Foundation’s annual fundraiser tell me that Southborough families are welcome to join the festivities.

NEF funds support for programs/resources at Northborough schools, including Algonquin Regional High School.

NEF trivia nightThe event is NEF’s 14th annual. The website promotes:

Are you a trivia star? Time to grab your smartest friends and test your knowledge to help make important strides for the Northborough Schools!

Adding to the fun, participants are encouraged (but not required) to wear team costumes.

The early bird registration date (through this Friday, March 29th) is $160 per team of 2-4 people. Spectators are also welcome “with a $10 suggested donation at the door.”

The event is Friday, April 5th at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club (284 E. Temple St, Boylston). Doors will open at 7:00 pm and questions begin at 7:30 pm. There will be a cash bar and light snacks.

NEF’s website describes “a low-pressure trivia environment encouraging fun team rivalry.” Questions will cover sports, entertainment, history, and science:

All answers are recorded on an answer sheet after a team consensus is made. At the end of a round, answer sheets are submitted for scoring.

This past September, NEF awarded 15 grants that included the following four programs at Algonquin:

All Access Pass – provided students with simulated business internships” with hands-on activities to “help students practice their critical thinking skills, utilize newfound knowledge, and gain industry perspectives by mimicking real-world workspaces.”

It’s a Basic Need… Period  – Recognizing that “one out of five students in the United States does not have access to period products” and “due to the unpredictability of menstruation, even menstruators who can afford products might find themselves without products when in need”, the program funds free menstrual products for school restrooms at both Algonquin and Melican Middle School.

Pathful Connect – The program allows hearing from career speakers without being “limited by our geography”. The platform “offers tailored guidance and access to industry experts, including the opportunity for staff to access an expansive library of online discussions with 58,000+ professionals from just about any industry students and staff could imagine” including arranging for “7-9 live online sessions each week”.

The Puzzle Project – Supports “the creation of ‘puzzle stations’ in ten classrooms at Algonquin. A puzzle station is an area in a classroom where students can work collaboratively on a large jigsaw puzzle in both formal and informal ways.” Goals include giving students an alternative to screen time when they finish work or need a break. It provides stress relief, boosts creativity and “can help improve cognitive functioning including increasing short-term memory, improving visual-spatial reasoning, and building problem-solving skills.”
