Patricia Ann Richardson, Pat as she was affectionately known to many, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2024, at the age of 92 at Harmony, Morgantown, WV. Born on April 25, 1931, in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Pat led a life marked by passion for education, recreation, and the joy of connecting with others.
Pat’s journey in education began at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she completed her undergraduate studies. Her love for fostering community and recreation led her to pursue a Master’s in Recreation from Boston University. This foundation paved the way for a distinguished career as a public educator in Massachusetts, where she taught at various institutions including Madonna Hall, Albert S. Woodward, Jr. High School, Assabet Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School, and Fay School. Her commitment to student development and her innovative approach to education were hallmarks of her tenure, culminating in her retirement from the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).
Beyond the classroom, Pat’s influence extended into her community through her role as the Director of Recreation in Westborough and Southborough, Massachusetts. Her leadership in these positions was characterized by a genuine desire to enhance the lives of residents through recreational activities and programs. Her efforts not only enriched her community but also served as a testament to her belief in the power of play and leisure in personal growth and well-being.
Pat’s interests were as vibrant and diverse as her career. An avid tennis enthusiast, she found joy and companionship on the courts. Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to Doug Hornak and Terry Deremer at the Summit Tennis Academy, in Morgantown, WV, for their unwavering love, care, and kindness toward Pat. Her love for the sport was matched only by her passion for travel and the great outdoors. Camping and visiting National Parks were among her favorite activities, allowing her to immerse herself in the natural beauty that she so cherished.
Those who knew Pat will remember her as the epitome of friendliness and kindness. Her warm smile and generous spirit were a comfort and inspiration to all who crossed her path. She was a caregiver not only in her professional life but also in her personal relationships, nurturing and supporting those around her with an open heart.
Pat’s legacy is carried on by her family, including her son, Michael (Juliana) Spelman of Los Angeles, CA; her devoted friend of 52 years, Ms. Susan Allen of Southborough, MA; her sister, Marilyn Cole of Monterey, CA; her niece, Brenda C. (Les) Seymour; her nephew, Jim Cole; and her great-nephews, Nathan and Raymond Cole, the latter serving in the US Army.
Patricia Ann Richardson’s life was a tapestry woven with the threads of education, community service, and the pursuit of happiness through simple pleasures. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we celebrate the enduring impact she has made on the many lives she touched. Her spirit, characterized by her love for learning, recreation, and the bonds of family and friendship, will continue to inspire and guide us. Pat’s memory will be cherished and honored by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Pat’s family will honor her request for cremation. A private scattering ceremony will be held in Massachusetts.

Pat was among the first people I met from town when I moved to MA from CA. I am a teacher at the Fay school, and she was working here when I came on board. She was beyond kind, sharing lessons and wisdom for which I am forever grateful. Years later I was able to take tennis lessons with Pat. It was a fun time, although I think I exacerbated her with my inability to do a proper backhand. In the years since I saw her around town, she always said hello and chat for a moment. I send my condolences to her family and friends, and you find comfort in knowing Pat’s impact on so many people!
