This Tuesday, Southborough Youth and Family Services is holding another suicide prevention training for community members. The free workshop will train participants on how to recognize and appropriately respond to concerning signs.

SYFS’ Shannon Kinayman has previously pitched the beauty of the QPR program as teaching skills valuable beyond suicide prevention. They can also be used to have conversations when you notice someone struggling with emotional issues, even if they aren’t suicidal.

The workshop is titled “Question, Persuade, Refer: How ANY Person Can Prevent Suicide”. It will take place over zoom on Tuesday, May 21, 6:30 – 8:30 pm.

“Know the Signs, Know the Steps” is a QPR Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Training that is a grass-roots way for you to help keep your youth, friends, loved ones, and  community safe.

QPR is an acronym for Question, Persuade, Refer. Not unlike CPR it teaches basic skills to help a person in crisis. In this 2-hour training, you are taught how to ask the suicide Question, how to Persuade a person to tell you more and to seek help, and Refer to outside help.

In the session, Kinayman will teach participants “why preventing suicide is everyone’s job” and “how using empathy and love is all you need to help your friends and loved ones.”

Registration is required. To sign up, click here. (For other Mental Health Awareness Month events, click here.)

If you have questions about the program or need help registering, call Kinayman at 508-481-5676, ext. 3.
