Shelf Help: A book group focused on self-help

SYFS & the Library are teaming up to offer a special "community book discussion group", a few chapters at a time. The first topic is Child Anxiety and/or OCD.

Above: Whether you like the genre, or you are especially interested in the first topic tackled, you may want to join a new book group organized by the Town. (image left of cropped flyer)

Southborough Youth & Family Services and the Southborough Library are promoting, “Like to read and want to learn? Join a new community book discussion group.”

If you’re interested, you’ll want to sign up quickly to get started reading in time for the first meeting in less than 4 weeks. Fortunately, you won’t have to tackle the entire book by then.

The new group will meet 4:00 – 5:30 pm on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Southborough Library on the main floor.

Each book will be read in sections over the course of three meetings. Copies of the books will be available for each participant through the Southborough Library.

Shelf Help flyer - Fall sessionThe first session starts with a discussion of Breaking Free of Child Anxiety and OCD: a scientifically proven program for parents by Eli Lebowitz:

Learn how to help your child manage anxiety… a few chapters at a time!

Participants should read the first four chapters in time to discuss on Tuesday, October 8th.

The group will meet again on November 12th and December 10th, each time having pre-reading another section of the book.

Shelf Help flyer '24-'25If this particular topic doesn’t speak to you, you may still want to reach out or keep an out for upcoming sessions. SYFS and the Library have already picked out the books to discuss through next spring:

  • January – March 2025 – The Upward Spiral: using neuroscience to reverse the course of depression, one small change at a time by Alex Korb
  • April – June 2025 – Fourteen Talks By Age Fourteen: the essential conversations you need to have with your kids before they start high school – and how (best) to have them by Michelle Icard

If you have any questions, please call (508) 481-5676 or email syfs@southboroughma.com.

As long as I’m writing about SYFS, I’ll remind readers that the department is highlighting Suicide Prevention this month. Read more about that here.
