In the past, I’ve shared news about Southborough Youth & Family Services’ scheduled workshops on important mental health topics.
Now, the agency is announcing a more flexible way for people to learn about the topics that can help them, their loved ones, or even groups of colleagues.
The public is invited to schedule a session with an SYFS member, choosing from “a menu of topics” and for a range of private or public conversations.
Appointments can be one-on-one. Or you can choose to include one or more others (like family members or close friends), a larger gathering (such as a friend group, club, or workplace Professional Development), or even an open-to-the-public workshop.
The topics are geared to adults. However, Director Sarah Cassell tells me that if a teen is interested in one of the topics, they could adapt content. (They are also working on developing sessions for youth to announce in the future.)
For community members interested in supporting SYFS’ Suicide Prevention month initiative, it’s worth noting that one of the topics is the QPR Suicide Prevention course.
The full slate of choices is:
Understanding Depression (1 hour)
Learn what Depression looks like, how impacts a person, what can contribute to Depression, how to support someone with Depression, and what to avoid.
Understanding Anxiety (1 hour)
Learn what Anxiety looks like, how impacts a person, what can contribute to Anxiety, how to support someone with Anxiety, and what to avoid.
Understanding ADHD (1 hour)
Learn what ADHD looks like, how impacts a person, what can contribute to ADHD, how to support someone with ADHD, and what to avoid.
Listen With L.O.V.E. (1 hour)
Validation is the # 1 skill in in diffusing tense conversations and high emotions, in expressing your care and support to those you love, and an essential element in healthy relationships. Learn how to use this skill to improve communication with anyone you interact with and experience improved outcomes.
Say It With L.O.V.E. (1 hour)
Want to feel heard and get your needs met in a relationship without compromising your values or jeopardizing your relationship? Sounds simple but it isn’t always so straight forward. Come to Say It With L.O.V.E. to learn self advocacy and communication skills that accomplish just that.
QPR Suicide Prevention (2 hours)
Contrary to common belief, talking about suicide is the # 1 way to decrease risk. Learn to become comfortable with the conversation, know what questions to ask, what to avoid, and where to get help. It could be you; a teacher, a friend, a parent, a neighbor; who saves a life just through your willingness to listen, your comfort in asking the right questions, and your knowledge of where to get help.
Navigating the Mental Health System (1 hour)
With a variety of mental health supports available in the state of Massachusetts, it can feel overwhelming knowing where to turn first and understanding what all the information means. Learn about different options available to you, what to look for, and when to utilize each service.
Introducing SYFS! (1 hour)
