MWDN: “Dick Walsh remembered”

The Metrowest Daily News spoke with Algonquin’s current and former Athletic Directors and alumni for a story sharing their fond memories of the late Dick Walsh, “Algonquin’s first athletic director who served as football and baseball coach as well as a physical education teacher”.

The local paper’s article includes:

Dick Walsh last coached in 1983. But he continued to leave a maroon and gold mark for another 41 years.

“He was in my office every single day,” said former 16-year Algonquin Regional High School athletic director Fran Whitten. . .

He remained a presence at the school long after his coaching days ended.

[Current AD Mike Mocerino] recalled how Walsh sold candy bars outside the gymnasium, with the money raised going toward one of the equipment sheds.

“He was always constantly looking to give back to Algonquin and the community, where he first started,” Mocerino said.

I had Mr. Walsh 6th grade through senior year at Algonquin. He was a great man. Always listened to people, coached everyone to do better, and could crack a few jokes. He will be sorely missed. He touched a lot of lives
