Above: Southborough residents’ efforts to do good some over the next week include a Hurricane Relief Collection Drive, a Dog Walk to raise funds for rare cancer research, and a golfing fundraiser for ALS research.

  • MDM Project Live (8:00 –11:00 pm) @ Owen O’Leary’s, 50 Turnpike Rd: The band will play music ranging from classic rock to one hit wonders. For details, see Facebook event.

  • Collection for Hurricane Helene (8:00 am – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center, 9 Cordaville Rd: A collection of specifically needed items that will be driven down to North Carolina to aid hurricane victims in need. For details, see dedicated post.
  • DIY Gulbankian Workshop (2:00 – 3:00 pm) @ Gulbankian Florist, 40 Mt Vickery Rd: There is a registration fee and attendance is limited. This session make an herb swag. For details, see Facebook event.
  • Southborough Safe Spaces Movie Night (6:00 – 8:00 pm) @ St Mark’s Church, 27 Main Street: Event for grades 6-12 hosted by Southborough Safe Spaces for LBGTQ+ youth of all faiths and their allies. Tonight, they’ll be watching a movie while enjoying Pizza, Popcorn, Pajamas & Plushies. For details, see Facebook event.
  • ARHS 35th Reunion (7:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center, 9 Cordaville Rd: Join your Algonquin Class of 1989 classmates for a night of food, drinks and catching up with old friends! For details, see Facebook event.
  • Sit & Knit (2:00 – 4:00 pm) @ Southborough Library: Semi-monthly program for ages 18+ to drop in and work on your latest knitting or crochet projects while you enjoy the company of fellow yarn crafters in a relaxed social setting. All levels are welcome but no formal instruction will be given.

  • Shannon’s Path Dog Walk (10:00 am) @ Neary School, 53 Parkerville Road: 3rd annual 5K dog walk benefiting rare cancer research and care in memory of Shannon McDonald. No dogs are required. A fun run is also promoted.. For details, see dedicated post.

Monday, October 7, 2024

  • Walking Group for Seniors (8:30 am) @ Trottier Middle School’s outdoor track: Free weekly walking group organized by the Southborough Senior Center. Walkers generally go for an hour, but continue for as long as you wish. The location is a loop, so feel free to join late.
  • Preschool Story Time (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: Ages 2-5 are invited for stories and a craft based on a weekly theme. No registration required. For details, see related post.
  • Knitting Club (1:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: Social knitting group — scheduled to meet weekly this summer. Beginners are welcome and supplies will be provided, though you can also bring your own and “any creation you are working on”.
  • Park Day (1:00 pm) @ Fayville Park: Great Explorers Co-op invites parents to bring a blanket chair, snacks and your kids ages birth to 17. (Weather dependent.) For details, see Facebook event.

  • Preschool Story Time (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: Ages 2-5 are invited for stories and a craft based on a weekly theme. No registration required. For details, see related post.
  • Bridge (12:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: A weekly card group, welcoming new participants. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • Postponed to October 22nd — Shelf Help Book Club (4:00 – 5:30 pm) @ Southborough Library: A community book discussion group run by SYFS with the Southborough Library. Members should have read a pre-assigned section of the book prior to each meeting. The Oct-Dec book is Breaking Free of Child Anxiety and OCD. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Ideas&Insights: Raising Thrivers (7:00 – 8:30 pm) @ Fay School: Free expert author talk for parents on Tips and Tools to Help Kids Thrive in An Anxious, Uncertain World. Registration required. For details, see dedicated post.

  • Walking Group for Seniors (8:30 am) @ Southborough cemetery, 11 Cordaville Road: Free weekly walking group organized by the Southborough Senior Center. Walkers generally go for an hour, but continue for as long as you wish. The location is a loop, so feel free to join late.
  • Tech Time (11:00 am – 12:00 pm) @ Southborough Library, Teen Room: Library staff will help patrons with questions about devices, library apps, research databases and more. This is a weekly drop-in opportunity. No registration necessary.
  • Elder Law Advice (10:00 – 10:45 am) @ phone or zoom: Southborough seniors can sign up for a free 15 minute session of individualized legal advice from an Elder Law attorney. For details, see the Senior Center’s newsletter, p. 9.
  • Young Scientists STEM Beginnings (1:15 – 2:00 pm) @ Southborough Library: This is a free 6-week in-person series for children, ages 3-6 to learn STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) concepts through hands-on activities, story time and simple experiments..   • Crafternoon: Mini Pumpkin Painting (4:30 – 5:30 pm) @ Southborough Library: Part of the Library’s free crafting series. This session is for ages 8 & Up. This session Create a unique little fall decoration using acrylic enamel paints and other embellishments. For details, see related post.

  • ARHS Financial Aid Info Night (6:30 – 7:30 pm) @ Algonquin Regional High School: Presentation for parents of seniors about the Financial Aid process for college
  • ARHS College Essay Night Against Procrastination (6:00-8:00  pm) @ Algonquin, AWC (room d112): ARHS seniors are invited to the Algonquin Writing Center. The event is meant to help encourage writers to work on their college essays by locking in on your draft or receiving feedback from one of our peer tutors. (As always, AWC tutoring is free.)

  • Pumpkin drop-off (4:00 – 6:00 pm) @ Common Street: Drop-off your carved or decorated contributions to the Pumpkin Stroll display on the stone wall around the Old Burial Grounds. 
  • Apothecary Artists Grand Opening (5:00 – 8:00 pm) @ 11 Main Street: Open House of the new studio & gallery location (with a shop) includes refreshments and art activities. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Pumpkin Stroll (6:00 – 8:00 pm) @ line up begins in front of 25 Main Street: The community is invited to view the big display of jack-o-lanterns. Sponsored by Southborough Rotary, which will be offering refreshments and collecting items for the Food Pantry from their latest needs list

Heritage Day, Monday, October 14, 2024

  • State holiday (for Columbus Day / Indigenous People’s Day): No public school. Town offices, Senior Center, and Library are closed.
  • Golf Fore ALS @ Southborough Golf Club: All long weekend, $10 from each player’s greens fees will go to ALS research and care. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Heritage Day (10:00 am – 2:00 pm) on the St. Mark’s field (at the intersection of routes 30 & 85) and nearby locations: The the annual town celebration of our community. While it honors the town’s history, it is rooted in the present, bringing together different segments of the community. For details, see thread for past and future coverage.
    • Town Parade (10:00 am) departs from St. Anne’s Church on Boston Road, proceeds down Main Street, ending at Marlborough Road and St. Mark’s Street.
    • Heritage Day (10:00 am – 2:00 pm) on the St. Mark’s field (at the intersection of routes 30 & 85) and nearby locations: For details of the events planned on the field, see dedicated post.
    • Friends of Southborough Library Book & Bake Sale (10:00 am – 3:00 pm) @ Southborough Library parking lot: One free book per child. Selling used books, and more. There will also be a Bake Sale table with hot cocoa. For details, see dedicated post.
    • KofC Soccer Challenge (10:00 am – 1:00 pm) @ St. Mark’s field (at the intersection of routes 30 & 85): Soccer penalty shot competition for ages 6-16. For details, see dedicated post.
    • Fire Station Open House (11:00 am – 2:00 pm) @ Public Safety Building: The Southborough Fire Dept will open its garage bay to offer tours, live demos, face painting, goodie bags and more. For details, see dedicated post.
    • Dedication Ceremony (12:00 pm) @ Heritage Park: The Town will honor the memory of Kim Tolander by dedicating a bench in the new park. For details, see dedicated post.
    • Skyrise Children’s Theater performance (12:00 pm) @ Community House lawn (28 Main St): Skyrise’s “2024 All Stars Cast” of kids will perform a free variety show. For details, see related post.
