The week in sports

Boys XC 2nd place for CMass; CMADA tourneys kicking off for Volleyball and Field Hockey

One Titans team earned 2nd place at a CMass Championship yesterday. And two other teams are about to enter their CMass tourneys this week.

Titans Boys Cross Country came in 2nd at the CMass District E Championships on Sunday at Wachusett. Check out their photos and videos on Instagram below:

Both the Boys and Girls Cross Country will compete in the League Championships this weekend. (I couldn’t find any news posted on the Girls team’s performance at yesterday’s event.)

The CMADA (Central Mass Athletic Directors Association) tourneys are kicking off with Girls Volleyball and Field Hockey.

ARHS Girls Volleyball will host its semi-finals against #3 Wachusett tomorrow night. Despite the seeding, the Gonk girls may be the underdogs. They already lost to Wachusett the two times they played them this fall.

Still, the underdogs upset Nipmuc last week by breaking that team’s 15 game winning streak (3-0). (You can see photo highlights here.)

Unfortunately that was bookended by losses including to the top seed in the CMass brackets — Shrewsbury, their second loss to that team. And that’s who they’ll likely face if they make ti to the Finals on Thursday. (Unless #4 Groton-Dunstable pulls off its own surprise.)

Titans Field Hockey will play in their CMADA semi-finals on Thursday. The team is also ranked #2 Titans for Class A. They’ll host #3 Nashoba, who they have beaten once and more recently tied.

If they prevail, they’ll face a team they have yet to play this season for the Finals on Saturday. That will either be #1 Uxbridge or #4 Doherty.

The team’s record is currently 14-1-1 after beating Wachusett (1-0) and Natick (4-1) last week. They remained steady at #3 in the MIAA Division 1 Power Rankings.

Gonk Football held its #14 rank in Division 2, beating Marlborough 42-26 last Friday. You can read the Community Advocate’s coverage, including the dominance of a star player, in what they quipped was “the Owen Ellsworth show”. Their record is now 4-2.

The team that will cheer them on this Friday night back home will also have a competition of their own this weekend at Shepherd Hill’s Cheer Invitational.

Boys Soccer is now #19 in in D1 Power Rankings after beating Grafton last week. Girls Soccer tied with Grafton, but beat Hingham 3-1. They are now ranked #25. Both are qualified to compete in upcoming state tourneys.

Now, here are the ARHS varsity games on tap for the week:
