How Southborough’s vote shifted

One big story has clearly dominated the media this week — the national growth in support for former President, and now President Elect, Donald Trump that took many people by surprise.

Reporting on “what happened?” has focused on the voting trends including a purported growth of support in “blue states” since the 2020 election.

I was curious about how it all played out in blue Southborough. So I took a look at the numbers. And now I’m sharing that with you.

A straight up comparison of the percentage of votes ballots cast in the elections shows an uptick in votes for Trump from 2020 to 2024. (Though, not as large as the downtick from 2016 to 2020.) And the reverse is true for Democrats.

But if you account for voter apathy, it seems the biggest change in our town was the number of voters who chose not to vote for either major party, including by not participating in the election at all.

That resulted in a bigger decline in support for Democrats than it did an increase in support for the Republican ticket.
