For now, the Trustees are sticking with one educational/hiking event in Southborough per month. This winter, that includes Chestnut Hill Farm’s annual  solstice celebration (this weekend) and maple tapping. Plus, they continue to teach about foraging for fungi.

All events require pre-registration and include a fee. Fees listed below are member/non-member rates. (You can find membership details here.)

Winter Solstice (from Facebook event)Winter Solstice Walk

Mark the solstice by reflecting on the end of the season and writing wishes for the coming year. It begins in the Deerfoot Barn, followed by a stroll to the top of the hill and a solstice story. Then, gather around a fire pit to reflect on wishes.

The Trustees continue to hold these educational hikes teaching about mushrooms’ “vital role in the ecosystem” and methods “to identify and group similar fungi together, tips and tricks for locating mushrooms in seemingly barren forests and fields” led by “knowledgeable guides”. These events are “best suited for families with children ages 6 and up”.

Maple tapping at Chestnut Hill farm from 2023 Facebook postMaple Tap-A-Thon at Chestnut Hill Farm
Saturday, February 22nd, 10:00 – 11:30 am and 12:30 – 2:00 pm

Cost: $15/$25 per adult and $12/$20 per child

At the annual event, learn how to identify maple trees, the history of tapping, and how maple sap runs. Each family group will then set their own tap to get the farm’s maple flowing. You’ll go home with instructions on how to tap your own maple trees and make your own syrup. Note: The event may be postponed to later in the season “if tapping conditions aren’t ideal due to the unpredictable nature of weather.”
