In the fall, Southborough Youth & Family Services and the Southborough Library promoted a new community book group for those who like to read and learn. The concept was to tackle the book a few chapters at a time, with group discussions along the way.
Starting this month, they’ll take on their second book. It’s geared to helping participants “Learn how to navigate depression and anxiety as they may creep in during the darker months of the year.”
The January through March session of meetings will be focused on The Upward Spiral: Using neuroscience to reverse the course of depression, one small change at a time by Alex Korb.
If you’re interested, it’s not too late to sign up to get your book and get started on reading in time for the first discussion.
Although the online registration deadline passed, Sarah Cassell (Director of Youth and Family Services) tells me that people interested in joining the group can email her directly at scassell@southboroughma.com to sign up. SYFS and the library have copies of the book available for participants to borrow. For the first meeting on January 14th, readers will want to complete “Part 1” (which runs through page 74).
As for what you’ll be reading about, the publisher describes:
Depression can feel like a downward spiral, pulling you into a vortex of sadness, fatigue, and apathy. . .
neuroscientist Alex Korb demystifies the neurological processes in the brain that cause depression and offers effective ways to get better. . . In the book, you’ll discover that there isn’t “one big solution” that will solve your depression. Instead, there are dozens of small, practical things you can do to alleviate your symptoms and start healing. Some are as simple as relaxing certain muscles to reduce feelings of anxiety, while others involve making small efforts toward more positive social interactions. Small steps in the right direction can have profound effects giving you the power to literally “reshape” your brain.
The discussion group is scheduled to meet 4:00 – 5:30 pm on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Southborough Library on the main floor.
If this particular book doesn’t speak to you, you may still want to reach out or keep an eye out for the following session this spring. In April – June 2025, the group will discuss Fourteen Talks By Age Fourteen: the essential conversations you need to have with your kids before they start high school – and how (best) to have them by Michelle Icard
