The week in sports

Power rankings are out for Hockey and Basketball

MIAA posted the power rankings for Basketball and Hockey on Friday. They showed one Algonquin team on solid footing for making playoffs later this winter, two with fairly good chances, and one on very shaky ground.

ARHS Boys Basketball ranked #33 for Division 1 — the last spot that can qualify to make playoffs this winter. The ranking was based on their record as of their latest win, 62-46 over Hudson last Tuesday. That was followed by a 54-46 loss to Leominster on Friday night. Their current record is 6-3.

Girls Basketball‘s record is also 6-3 after a win and loss last week. The Titans beat Wayland 54-26 but lost to Leominster 41-36 in their Friday night game. In the initial power rankings they were #26, six ranks above their qualifying cutoff.

Boys Ice Hockey is ranked #25, seven spots above their Division 2 playoff cutoff. The rankings were posted after their 4-1 loss to Hopedale last week but before their 5-5 tie with North Middlesex on Saturday. Their record is currently 4-3-1.

Girls Ice Hockey is ranked #13 for D2 with a 3-1-1 record. Last week, they beat Westford 3-2. Their schedule is finally starting to heat up. They’ll play three times this week, starting with a home game vs Shrewsbury tonight.

One of the strongest ARHS teams this winter is Girls Swimming. The Titans are at 7-1 after beating both Tantasqua (120-60) and Wachusett (93-76) in meets last week. Boys Swimming also beat Wachusett (78-45) but lost to Tantasqua (90-87). They stand at 5-3.

Both Boys and Girls Indoor Track teams competed in the three day New England Challenge in Boston last week. Algonquin’s Jonah Gould came in 2nd place for the Men’s 1 Mile and Gonk Girls came in 4th place for the 1600 meter Sprint Medley Relay. You can find the full, detailed results here.

This weekend, the track teams will head back to Boston for the MIAA Division 2 State Relays. Prior to that, they’ll compete again in the 3rd of 5 multi-school “Central Mass Meets” on Wednesday’s this winter leading up to the CMass District competition on February 9th. But it looks like the schools don’t post results from those meets.

(No results were posted for Wrestling or Ski competitions last week, and Gymnastics didn’t have a competition.)
