Here are my highlights from Algonquin varsity sports competitions last week and the schedule for this week (along with some photo highlights).
Boys Basketball‘s record improved to 9-3 after winning three straight games. Those wins were 61-46 over Wachusett, 58-26 over Fitchburg, and 62-50 over Nashoba. (Their MIAA Power Ranking only moved up one notch to #32 for Division 1, but that predates the last two wins.)
Girls Basketball‘s three game streak is in the opposite direction, making their record 6-5. Last week the Gonk girls lost to Wachusett 73-42 and Nashoba 50-40. (Their D1 ranking of #27 predates the latest loss.)
Boys Ice Hockey tied Wachusett 2-2 last week, then lost to Whitman-Hanson 5-3 yesterday. (Their Division 2 rank change, up one to #24, also predates their latest loss.)
Over the past eight days, Titans Girls Ice Hockey has scored two wins and two more ties. The co-op team beat Shrewsbury 3-1, and Franklin 2-0. In between, they tied Dover-Sherborn 3-3 and Pope Francis 2-2. (Their D2 ranking improvement by three spots to #10 predates the most recent tie and win.)
Boys & Girls Swimming teams each won both of their meets last week. The Boys beat Tyngsborough 82-41 and AMSA 95-72. The Girls won 93-56 and 98-77. For the Girls, it extended their winning streak to 8 meets.
Indoor Track teams did well at the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Division 2 Relay meet on Friday. The Girls came in #6 and Boys #11. The Girls’ team won the 1600 meter Sprint Medley Relay. While the Boys placed 3rd place for that meet, they reportedly broke the school’s record and qualified for Nationals. The Boys also placed third for the long jump (possibly also breaking a school record) and the high jump. You can find the full results here.
Wrestling lost 30-48 in its meet with North Middlesex last week.
No results were posted for last week’s meets by Gymnastics, or Ski teams, but their competition highlights were among those posted to Instagram by Photographer Jeff Slovin. He also covered Titans Girls Hockey and Boys Basketball. Scroll down to below this week’s schedules for the pics (or click here to go to his Instagram feed).
Now, here are the ARHS varsity games still on tap for the week:
