Obituary: Matthew Joseph Malloy, Jr., 97

Matthew (“Matt”) Joseph Malloy, Jr., of Southborough, died peacefully with the rites of the Catholic Church on January 30, 2025, not quite a month after his ninety-seventh birthday, from complications of Covid. Matthew is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-four years, Barbara (Crosby), of South Boston. Also, six siblings–in order, Patricia and Ione of Newton; John and Dorothy (Newell) of Hingham; Paul and Sally (Quinn) of Newton, and Nancy Quinlan of South Natick. Brother George of Mashpee and Naples, Florida, died in 2019, his beloved Ruth (Carter) in 2023. Matthew is also survived by his twenty-three impressive nieces and nephews.

Matthew was born in Pittsburgh on January 1, 1928, to Matthew J. and Ione Wilkinson Lohr Malloy. He grew up in the Boston Area, earning degrees at The Rivers School, Boston College, and Suffolk University Law. He loved sports—running and winning mile and half-mile races for The Rivers School—later skiing the Alps in Switzerland and Austria. He avoided golf, he said, for fear of becoming a golf addict. He was also a happy gardener, because he loved flowers and enjoyed a conversation about them.

Matthew was the oldest child and a core strength of the family through his efforts in behalf of family members. As advisor to his father, President Malloy of Chamberlayne Junior College, he urged the implementation of an electronic data-processing curriculum at the college in 1958, the birth-time of electronic data processing. This implementation was arguably the single most important reason that Chamberlayne would become at the time the largest private junior college in the United States. When his brother Paul decided to run for state representative from Newton, Matthew organized and directed his four successful campaigns. And he prepared income tax returns for multiple family members through 2023.

Matthew spent his final years at home in the company of his beloved and loving wife, Barbara, beginning each day with the recitation of the rosary together.

Visiting hours for Matt will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, from 5:00-7:00PM at the Morris-Johnston Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Southborough, MA 01772. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at 11:00AM at St, Anne Church, 20 Boston Rd., Southborough, MA. A graveside service will follow at Newton Cemetery, 791 Walnut St., Newton Center, MA 02459.
