The week in sports

Here are my highlights from Algonquin varsity sports competitions last week and the schedule for this week.

At the Indoor Track MidWach Indoor League over the weekend, the Algonquin Boys and Girls teams had several big successes helping the Girls team win 2nd Place for Division A and the Boys 3rd Place. Highlights from the overall results were:

  • Tanvi Mehta won the Girls 600 meters.
  • Miles Lipka came in 1st For Boys 55 meters and 2nd for the High Jump.
  • Arianna Gentile came in 2nd for the Girls 55 Meters and 300 meters.
  • Niamh Osullivan came in 2nd place for Girls High Jump and Max Brown 3rd place for the Boys.
  • Jonah Gould placed 3rd for Boys 1 Mile.
  • And the ARHS Boys won the 4x200m relay.

There were even more Titan achievements in their dedicated Division A competitions. You can find the full results here.

This weekend they’ll compete in the Division 2 State Championships.

Last week was also the Midwach League Championships for Swimming & Diving.

In the Telegram’s recap of the Swim Championships, it reports, that ARHS Boys came in 2nd place to Grafton in the The Boys scored:

301 points, with junior Simon Linden placing second in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 50 freestyle and senior teammate Maxim Achkinazi taking third in the 500 freestyle and seventh in the 200 freestyle.

For the Girls:

Mina Chung topped the 200 individual medley (2:17.17) as Algonquin placed third with 267 points.

I can’t find any results from the Diving Championships (or for the Ski and Wrestling team’s competitions last week).

Other teams are still in regular winter season competitions.

In Titans Ice Hockey, the Boys lost 2 of their games last week. But, they happily won the 10th Annual Brian Arsenault Memorial Game on Saturday, beating Hopedale 3-1. (Scroll down for photo highlights.) Earlier in the week, they lost to Hopkinton 5-4 and Framingham 24-3, lowering their Division 2 Ranking to #24.

Girls Ice Hockey beat Waltham 3-1 last week, moving them up to #3 for D2 before losing to Canton 1-0.

Girls Basketball moved up to #21 for Division 1, partially thanks to a 40-31 over Shrewsbury. The rank change was prior to losing 53-33 to Leominster on Friday.

Boys Basketball lost both of their games against the same schools. They moved up to #29 for D1 after their 50-40 loss to Shrewsbury, but before their 58-50 loss to Leominster.

According to an Instagram post by sports photographer Jeff Slovin, Gonk Gymnastics won its Senior Night meet over Shrewsbury last week. You can check out his post with photo highlights, along with ones from Saturday’s Boys Ice Hockey’s big game below or here.
