Here are my highlights from Algonquin varsity sports competitions last week and the schedule for this week.
Boys & Girls Indoor Track competed in the CMass District E Championships. Here are Gonk student highlights from the results that were posted (under Division 1):
- Arianna Gentile – #1 in Womens Long Jump & #2 in Womens 55 Meter Dash

- Jonah Gould, #2 Mens 2 Miles
- Niamh OSullivan, #2 Womens High Jump
- Max Brown, #3 Mens High Jump
- Jillian Belniak, #3 Womens 55 Meter Hurdles
- ARHS Relay teams
- #2 Womens 4×400 Relay
- #3 Mens 4×800 Relay
- #3 Womens 4×200 Relay
This coming weekend, they’ll compete in the Division 2 State Championships. (Apparently, the ARHS Athletics schedule that lists that as last weekend is wrong.)
Gymnastics competed in the MidWach League Championships on Wednesday. They placed third behind Marlborough and Westborough (but ahead of Groton-Dunstable and Shrewsbury).
The Telegram recapped:
the Titans got strong performances from Layla Paradise (fifth in points) and Katie Jennings (seventh in points). Algonquin’s Maya Regan was also fifth in the all-around, while teammate Hailey Simoneau placed eighth.
Due to Sunday’s snow storm, the Central-West Sectional Swimming Championships planned for yesterday were moved up to Saturday. The schedule change may have contributed to the surprising lack of media coverage. I can’t find results posted anywhere.
Hockey and Basketball are still in their regular season competitions.
Girls Ice Hockey beat Pope Francis 3-2 and Longmeadow 4-1 last week. In between they lost 1-0 to Peabody. Their record is now 10-3-3, and they are ranked #5 for Division 2.
Boys Ice Hockey beat Marlborough 8-2 last week, but lost to Westborough 2-1. They are ranked #20 for D2.
Girls Basketball is on a three game losing streak after playing Wachusett (67-49) and Nashoba (48-42) last week. They dropped to #23 in the Division 1 Power Ranking even before the Nashoba loss.
Boys Basketball also lost its 3rd straight game last week, 59-55 to Wachusett. The team dropped back down in Power Rankings to #32, just above the cutoff for post-season championships. But that’s before they beat Fitchburg on Friday, 61-44.
