The week in sports

Boys Indoor Track named D2 Champs; more teams headed to tournaments and championships

One Algonquin team of athletes was named State Champions for their Division last week, and others are scheduled to compete for titles of their own.

Meanwhile, this is the last week of the regular winter season for traditional team sports (Basketball & Hockey). And for one Gonk team, a game tonight could have high stakes.

Here are my highlights from Algonquin varsity sports competitions last week and the schedule for this week.

Among the Boys’ highlights, Miles Lipka finished 1st for both the 55 meter hurdles and the high jump and Jonah Gould 1st for the 1 Mile.

MIAA posted to its website:

Algonquin Regional was crowned champion in dramatic fashion and by the narrowest of margins. With one point for an eighth-place finish in the final event, the 4×800 relay, the Titans secured their 43rd team point and just squeezed ahead of runner-up Peabody Veterans Memorial High School (42).

The MIAA Meet of Champions will take place this Saturday, February 22nd at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Girls Swimming came in 5th place at their Central/West Sectionals over a week ago, where the Titan’s Mina Chung came in 3rd place for the 100 Yard Breaststroke. This past Saturday, the Girls ranked #13 at the D1 State Championships. (You can find the full results here.)

Boys Swimming ranked #13 at their Central/West Sectionals. Winter weather interfered with some swim tournaments, causing the Boys’ State championships to be postponed, with the date still TBD.

ARHS Wrestling hosted and competed in the Division 2 West Sectionals on Saturday. The Titans only came in 9th place as a team, but three members qualified for the D2 State Championships, and one as an alternate.

Ephraim Dupont and Harrison Manning came in #3 for their weight classes, Hendrill Costa #4, and Ben Akus #5. The D2 tournament is scheduled to open this Friday at Salem High.

Basketball and Hockey are closing in on the end of their regular season. Three ARHS teams are assured spots in the playoffs, but one is still on very shaky ground.

Boys Ice Hockey is #23 for Division 2. Last week, they lost to Auburn (2-1) and Shrewsbury (8-2), but beat Lowell (8-2) in the semi-final of the Newburyport Bank Classic tournament. Tonight, they’ll play in the finals against Peabody.

Girls Ice Hockey is still near the top of their pack. The Titans beat Franklin 3-2 and Lincoln-Sudbury 5-2 last week and Acton-Boxborough/Bromfield 3-0 yesterday. They are currently ranked #3 for D2.

Girls Basketball beat North 70-36 and St. Paul 39-38 last week.

The St. Paul game was part of the first round of Westborough High’s annual invitational tournament. Tonight, the Titans will take on Hopkinton for the semi-finals. (If they win, they should either face Tewksbury or Medway in Wednesday’s Finals.)

Win or lose, their #23 MIAA Power Ranking means they will be in the Division 1 playoffs.

Boys Basketball had a good week, beating both North Middlesex 69-47 and Marlborough 71-52, and improving their record to 13-6. But, as of this morning’s updated rankings, the team was still in the last qualifying slot for D1 brackets — #33.

That position could be jeopardized when they face St. Johns again tonight. The last time they played the private school in December, they lost 62-50.

Now, here are the ARHS varsity games on tap for this week:
