The week in sports

Hockey and Basketball enter state tournaments this week

Here are my highlights from Algonquin varsity sports competitions last week and the schedule for this week.

Girls Ice Hockey lost their last in-season game, 3-2 to Bishop Feehan last week. That lowered their Division 2 rank to #4. Tomorrow afternoon, they’ll be the favorites when they play #29 Wayland in the Round of 32 in the state tournament.

Boys Ice Hockey isn’t as highly ranked. But they should be entering the tourny on a high. Their last regular season game was winning the annual Newburyport Bank Classic Finals on Tuesday 8-0 over Peabody.

The Titans will be the underdogs in the D2 Round of 32. The #23 seed team will face #10 Boston Latin on Wednesday evening.

Yesterday, was the Central Mass All Star games for Boys Hockey. Four Titans were selected to play on the Quinn Conference’s team. (Those were Forwards Ben Yosca and Nate Meschisen and Defensemen Dylan Beard and Corey Roy.) Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any results posted from the game vs the Roy Conference yesterday.

ARHS Boys Basketball lost to St. John’s 78-62 in their last regular season game on Tuesday. I mistakenly thought that might have pushed them out of the MIAA D1 playoff brackets.1 But they still have a long shot at state glory. The Boys are #35, which means they’ll start in the Division 1 Preliminary Round. The Titans will travel to face #30 Cambridge Rindge & Latin tomorrow.

Girls Basketball also lost their last game of the season —  the semi-finals in the Westborough High Invitational tournament. Hopkinton beat them 54-32. They’ll enter the D1 tournament as #25. They’ll travel to play #8 Central Catholic on Thursday in the Round of 32.

Tomorrow, the Boys and Girls Ski teams will compete in the State Championships at Berkshire East.

On Friday, Wrestling sent three of its team members to the D2 State Championships. Unfortunately, none were able to win their first round.

Gonk Gymnastics hosted sectional tournaments last weekend, but hadn’t qualified to compete. (They’ll also host the state championships this coming weekend.)

Now, here are the details of the currently scheduled competitions. (Stay tuned for a mid-week update if successes lead to any additional games between now and next Monday):

  1. I misread the MIAA Power Rankings. They stated that the Top 32 teams would qualify for the tournament. I missed that the second page stated that lower ranked teams would qualify if they had a .500 or better record.
