This week, four Algonquin teams entered their first round in MIAA’s state tournament brackets for their divisions. Only one is moving on to the next round, to be played tomorrow.
In other sports news, two members of the Indoor Track teams will compete in the New England Championships tomorrow.
In the playoffs, there weren’t any big surprises. Each of the games was won by the best ranked team.
On Tuesday, 4th seed ARHS Girls Ice Hockey beat #29 Wayland 2-1. MetroWest Daily News highlighted Titans’ Lauren O’Malley’s performance in the MIAA Division 1 Round of 32 game:
The senior captain tucked away both goals in a 2-1 win over No. 29 Wayland in the Division 2 Round of 32 on Tuesday. Algonquin (14-4-3) will host No. 13 Medfield (12-7-2) at 4:50 p.m. Saturday in the Round of 16. Madleyn Glynn, Brenna Joyce and Annabelle Biagini provided an assist each for the Titans, while Addy Cagan made 15 saves. Wayland/Weston goalie Tilly Myles made 27 saves.
You can check out their photo of O’Malley in action here.
The girls will play #13 Medfield in the Sweet 16 tomorrow, Saturday, March 1st at 5:30 pm at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough.
The Titans will again be the clear favorites. The girls won 5 of their 7 most recent games while Medfield lost 5 of their last 7.
Assuming the Titans win, they’ll play either 5th seed Burlington or 28th seed Beverly in next week’s quarter finals.
Prior to this week’s win, the Boston Herald already predicted that Gonk’s co-op team will make it to the Final Four. At that point, they’d have to face top seed Westwood, unless an upset shakes things up. (The paper didn’t predict who would win that matchup, just that #2 Duxbury would win the ultimate title.)
As for the Titans teams that aren’t moving on. . .
On Wednesday, #23 ARHS Boys Hockey played 10th seed Boston Latin in the D1 Round of 32. They lost 3-1.
Basketball didn’t fare any better in the Division 2 tourneys.
On Tuesday, #35 ARHS Boys Basketball lost its prelim game to #30 Cambridge Rindge & Latin 50-62.
And last night #25 ARHS Girls Basketball lost to #8 Central Catholic 45-64 in the Round of 32.
For Indoor Track, the performance list has been posted for the New England Interscholastic Track & Field Championship. Algonquin is listed as sending two students to compete.
For the Girls team, junior Niamh O’Sullivan will compete in the High Jump. For the Boys team, senior Jonah Gould will compete in the 1 Mile Run. Both came in 12th place for those events at last weekend’s MIAA Meet of Champions — the best results for any of the ARHS athletes that competed.
The New England Championships are tomorrow, Saturday, March 1st at the Reggie Lewis Center. You can find details here.
