Last fall, Southborough Youth & Family Services and the Southborough Library promoted a new community book group for those who like to read and learn. The concept was to tackle the book a few chapters at a time, with group discussions along the way.

In less then a month, they’ll take on their third book. If you’re interested in exploring “how building meaninful connections can support our mental health”, you may want to reserve a copy of the book now.

The book is a different one than they previously promoted they would be reading this spring.1

In monthly meetings early April through June, the group will discuss the book Together: the Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World. The book is available through the library and SYFS.

Together is written by former Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. The publisher describes:

Murthy makes a case for loneliness as a public health concern: a root cause and contributor to many of the epidemics sweeping the world today from alcohol and drug addiction to violence to depression and anxiety. Loneliness, he argues, is affecting not only our health but also how our children experience school, how we perform in the workplace, and the sense of division and polarization in our society.

But, at the center of our loneliness is our innate desire to connect. We have evolved to participate in community, to forge lasting bonds with others, to help one another, and to share life experiences. We are, simply, better together. . .

with awareness of the causes of our loneliness, comes creative solutions to help ourselves and those we love to create more connected lives.

The discussion group is scheduled to meet 4:30 – 5:30 pm on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Southborough Library on the main floor.
