The week in sports

Pentathlon National Champ & start of spring scrimmages

This is tryout week for ARHS pring athletics teams. But the school’s biggest sports news is the final Titans achievement in winter sports.

Algonquin’s Miles Lipka scored first place for the Pentathlon at the New Balance Nationals Indoor competition over the weekend.

NBNI posted results show that Lipka’s accomplishments included scoring in 2nd place in both the pentathlon’s Shot Put and High Jump competitions.

Earlier in the season, the Southborough resident’s competition results drew the attention of the Boston Globe and the MetroWest Daily News. The MWDN story highlighted:

Lipka first discovered his talent and passion at Algonquin’s summer track camp. He looked forward to the instruction all year.

“It was my favorite part of the year,” Lipka said. “I knew that was going to be my thing once I got into high school.”

The camp allowed himself to measure pure physical capabilities. Track doesn’t depend on others or teamwork like other sports.

The story also quoted a teammate’s reaction to Lipka’s talents:

“We always said that we wanted to be mad about how good he was at everything, but we just couldn’t because he was so chill,” Algonquin’s Max Brown said. “We couldn’t hate him.”

You can find the full competition results here, including the Sprint Medley Relay results for the Titans Girls (#44 out of 69) and Boys (#67 out of 103).

As for the spring sports, Lacrosse has scheduled scrimmages for the end of the week. The Girls are scheduled to travel to Lexington on Friday and the Boys to Smithfield on Saturday (times TBD).

Girls Lacrosse also the first Titans team currently scheduled to enter season competitions the following weekend.
