Obituary: Gary “Lou” Michael McCarthy, 68

Gary “Lou” McCarthy of Southborough passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025, the age of 68. He was currently residing at the Westboro Beaumont while on Hospice battling end stage pancreatic cancer..

Working with family and the Hospice team, Lou had become at peace with his diagnosis, and was working on his recovery, celebrating 6 months of new sobriety. Lou did not want to be defined only by his addiction, he had returned to AA and was working on his amends. He left a heartfelt message for family & friends.

“I apologize to those I have hurt through my addiction. Although it was not my fault that I suffered from a cruel and deadly disease, my actions were my responsibility, for that I am sorry and heartbroken. I can rest in peace knowing that I have made my amends”

Preceded in death by his parents Paul and Jean McCarthy, Uncle Charlie and Claire McNeil, Uncle Ray O’Connell, Aunt Evelyn and Arthur and cousin Lesley Littlefield.

Lou is survived by his siblings: Dennis & Linda McCarthy and their children Amie & Claire McCarthy, David McCarthy & Emily and their boys John & Mathew; Laurie McCarthy; Brian & Karen McCarthy and daughter Christine; Karen & Audra McCarthy-Beauvais and daughter Sage; and Kathleen McCarthy-Montgomery- Cardillo, husband John and their 3 boys Devin, Troy and John Joseph.

Lou was happiest when he was able to enjoy family and friends. He enjoyed being outdoors whether skiing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, spending time on Englewood Beach in Florida, clam bakes, sea planes and Lusky at Peabody Pond in Maine, snorkeling anywhere he got the chance, and eating at East Hill Farm. Family Holidays and functions and hanging with the Boys from the “Reeg”. A special goodbye to Joe, Jaws & Shellton, you kept me company.

Lou was the life of the party and had a gift for bringing laughter wherever he went. He will be remembered in stories by his friends and loved ones. He will be missed, especially by the family & friends he was able to reconnected with.

A special thanks Lisa and her staff at the Beaumont, and to Trisha, Brian and the entire Salmon Hospice team for their care and support, despite his stubbornness at times.

“With all the attention and care I’ve received, I think I will die again”!! LOL

RIP “POOLMAN”, no more pain, you are loved. And remember, “There is no guard at the gate”
