Town Election Update: Third candidate files for Select Board race

Expect to choose between three candidates for the two seats on the Select Board this spring.

Since I last posted an update on the Southborough Town election, more candidates filed signed nomination papers, including a challenger to the two incumbents on the Select Board.

Reminder, for anyone interested in running in this election, the deadline to pull nomination papers to run is this Monday, and to file them (signed by voters) is Tuesday.

Earlier this week, I highlighted that the only resident to pull papers to challenge incumbents on the Select Board had yet to commit to run for the seat. That changed this morning when Tim Fling filed his papers.

Candidates still have until April 10th to change their mind and withdraw from the ballot. But at this point, it looks like there will be a three way race for the two seats. Incumbents Kathy Cook and Sam Stivers had already filed to run for reelection.

Here is the updated status for other seats as of this morning. . .

At this point, the only other race that is brewing is the two candidates for the 1 year seat on the Southborough School Committee. Diane Romm has filed her papers. Denise Eddy hasn’t yet, but she just pulled papers on Tuesday. So, you may see her collecting signatures this weekend.

For other seats, all but one are incumbents running for reelection unopposed. Of those, only two have yet to finish officially filing their papers (for the Board of Assessors and Housing Authority). As I previously reported, Alan Belniak is the only new candidate running for the Planning Board seat that Jesse Stein will step down from at the end of his term..

Reminder, the May 13th election is likely to have more voter participation than usual, due to the Neary School Building project being on the ballot.

Again, the deadline to pull papers is March 24th, and to file is March 25.1

You can read more details on the seats up for grabs in my past coverage here. (And you can keep tabs on whether anyone else has pulled/filed papers and learn more about the election on the Town Clerk’s dedicated election page here.)

  1. Based on the formula, until the next Gubernatorial election, the minimum number of registered Southborough voters’ signatures needed on filed forms is technically 48. But the Town Clerk’s office always advises to get at least 60, in case there is an issue with any names/addresses not matching the registration list.
