Last month, a Southborough commercial property owner was notified that the federal government was terminating its lease for an IRS office. This month, the decision was rescinded.
The Worcester Business Journal reported on March 3rd that the 10,787 sq ft office at 118 Turnpike Road was one of seven “DOGE-ed” offices in Central Mass. The story noted that the lease hadn’t been set to expire until November 2029.
Over the past week, media reports specified that the office had been one of four IRS offices in the state that had been targeted for closure. But, it was also one of the two that were “un-DOGE-ed”
On March 14th, the Associated Press reported:
Plans to cancel the leases at several of the IRS centers and other sites were in error and have been rescinded, according to a person with direct knowledge of the changes who spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity in order to avoid retaliation. Those changes are not yet reflected on DOGE’s list, which only removed one and added dozens more in its latest update published Thursday.
On March 19th, the WBJ updated that the termination had been rescinded.
Yesterday, MassLive reported:
Ferris Development Group first received a notice in February about the termination of the lease, according to [Ryan O’Toole, an asset manager for Ferris Development Group]. One month later, they received another notice that the lease was rescinded. The IRS is under a multi-year lease agreement and is expected to fully anticipated to remain in the building for the remainder of its term, which expires several years from now, according to O’Toole.
You can read more about that here.
I couldn’t find any information about the IRS’ use of the office, which isn’t listed on its website as one of its Taxpayer Assistance locations. (I had reached out to Ferris Development for confirmation and more details when the cancellation news broke, but never heard back.)
