On Saturday afternoon, residents and special guests gathered to hold a “Candlelight Vigil for Peace and Unity”. The group formed a circle on St. Mark’s Field, holding battery powered votive “candles”.
It wasn’t a huge crowd. But, given the rain and wind, organizers were pleased by the turnout.
The vigil was sponsored by Southborough’s Neighbors for Peace.
Resident Safdar Medina started the speeches off with a recitation of Maya Angelou’s poem “Human Family” with the refrain:
We are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.
Other speakers includedState Senator Jamie Eldridge, State Representative Carolyn Dykema, Southborough’s Board of Selectmen Chair Lisa Braccio, Rabbi Rachel Gurevitz of Congregation B’nai Shalom in Westborough and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church’s Reverand Phil Labelle.
Dipping into the Woodward School’s 3rd grade concert songbook, Labelle and his wife led the crowd in singing “Circle the Earth with Peace”.
At the end of the gathering, residents were given another opportunity to purchase a “Hate Has No Home Here” sign. Below are some photos from the gathering:
