Post-season Sports: 3 T-Hawks to New Englands, Gymnastics to States (with Individual Champ); Hockey & Boys Basketball into brackets, and more

Between state tournament triumphs, media coverage, and new brackets posted – there’s a lot of news to share out of Algonquin winter varsity sports.

Last week, I shared that some athletes were headed to All States. Over the weekend, three of them earned the right to continue on to the New England Tournaments.

Andrew Goddard wrestled his way to 2nd place at All States and Shea Garand 5th. (You can read about that in Southborough Wicked Local.) They’ll compete in Providence this Friday.

Indoor Track’s Matthew Madamba placed 3rd in the Boys 300 Meter Dash. He’ll return to the Reggie Lewis Track Center on Sunday.

I had also posted that Gymnastics came in 3rd at Sectionals. I updated that after learning I mistook the seeding info for results. The competition actually took place just this past Saturday. As I “predicted” the Girls placed 3rd qualifying them to compete at States – which they’ll host this Saturday at 1:00 pm. You can read more about the team’s performance in the Telegram’s story here.

A big contributor to their win was Liz Debroczy. It turns out that she floored judges the prior weekend at another tournament. Debroczy is the Overall Individual State Champion. You can read the Boston Herald’s coverage of that here. And below, via tweet, you can view one of her performances at team sectionals:

I missed that Cheerleading had winter competitions. According to a tweet from ARHS Athletics, Game Day Cheer came in 1st place in their Leagues and will compete in States. Performance took 3rd place at Leagues and will move on to Regionals. Both of those competitions are this Sunday at Shepherd Hill beginning at 10:00 am.

Post season tournaments have been posted for Basketball, Ice Hockey and Alpine Skiing. Four of the five teams will compete this week.

Two members of the Alpine Ski team will head to Wachusetts Mountain for their states this Wednesday – Kaitlyn Desio and Rudy Utzschneider.

With no sectionals in Girls Hockey, the Algonquin/Hudson team also heads straight to States this Wednesday. The 11th seed team will hit the ice on Wednesday night at 6:10 pm at the NESC rink. They’ll likely be feeling confident with the last three games as wins and a much lower seed competitor, Ursuline. If they win, they’ll face 6th seed Bishop Stang in the First Round.

Boys Hockey will have sectionals to compete in this week. But first, a look back recent weeks. Last weekend, Gonk sent four of its players to play in the Central MA All Stars, where they triumphed:

And last week, the Telegram wrote about the significance of “The Bruce Cup” the Boys won the weekend prior:

On Saturday, Westboro fell to Algonquin, 4-0. But more important than the game itself, the night was remembered for being night of the fifth annual Matt Bruce Memorial Cup, honoring the memory of Matt Bruce, who played for Algonquin and graduated in 2005.

Bruce died on March 21, 2014, at age 26, after a long, courageous battle with ALS. Money was raised before and during the game, with all proceeds being donated to the UMass ALS Cellucci Fund.
Algonquin coach Greg Cappello said getting his team involved in something bigger than the game was important.

“Matt Bruce was a member of the community who bravely faced an insidious disease,” Cappello said. “Working with adolescents and young adults, we are always trying to provide perspective and help them see the bigger picture of our work together.

This Saturday, the 3rd seed T-Hawks will play 6th seed Auburn in the Quarter Finals. That’s 7:10 pm at the NorthStar rink. If they win, they’ll take on 2nd seed Wachusett for the Semi-Finals next week.

Boys Basketball earned 5th seed in the Central Division 1 sectionals. They’ll bypass the First Round to head straight to the Quarter Finals. That’s this Thursday at 6:30 pm at 4th seed Franklin. If they win, they’ll head to the Semi-Finals on Sunday.

With only 5 wins in their season, Girls Basketball didn’t make the tourneys.
