Events this week: Story Fest at the Library, senior matinee, stuffie craft for tweens and teens, Trailblazers trip, Post Prom fundraiser, and Easter Egg Hunt (Updated)

Here are highlights of what’s happening around town this week. Reminder for those of you without kids – this week is Spring Break for public schools.

  • Working With Wheels (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library: Picture book author April Prince will help children ages 3-6 learn about how books are made during a story time, and then participants can make their own crafts based on What Do Wheels Do All Day?   • Tales of Adventure and Wordplay (11:30 am – 12:15 pm) @ Southborough Library: Author April Prince will perform a “rollicking read-aloud” of her story Goldenlocks and the Three Pirates. Then children ages 6 and up can learn about wordplay and fractured fairy tales and create a treasure map to take home. Registration is required. Call 508-485-5031 to find out if there is still room.   • Author Reading & Writing (3:30 – 4:30 pm) @ Southborough Library: Southborough author Susan Lubner will read to children ages 8 and up from her newly published novel, Lizzy and the Good Luck Girl, followed by guided writing activities.   • Movie Matinee – A Star is Born (1:00 – 2:30 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: Free screening for seniors of the 2018 version of A Star is Born starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. The film was nominated for several Oscars and Golden Globes including for Best Picture. Rated R Please sign up at the front desk or call (508) 229-4453. Snacks will be provided
  • Crafternoon: Stuffie Taxidermy (3:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library: Teens and tweens are invited to make wall art out of their old stuffed animals. Ages 10+ are invited to invited to take part in “Stuffie Taxidermy or Stuffie Makeover (a.k.a. “Franken-Stuffie”) Registration for this event is required – (but plenty of room was still left this morning.).   • Mount Auburn Cemetery Guided Tour (9:30 am – 3:30 pm) @ meet at the Southborough Senior Center: A program of the Trailblazers for active seniors. The bus trip includes a hiking tour and lunch.   • Children’s Author Story Time (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library, Children’s Room: Children’s author, Anna Staniszewski (Power Down, Little Robot), will read her books in a story time, followed by a sing-a-long and craft.   • Children’s Writing Workshop (11:30 am – 12:30 pm) @ Southborough Library: Children’s author, Anna Staniszewski (My Very Unfairy Tale Life Series), will hold a workshop on writing and story characters.   • Willy Wonka Kids performance (5:00 – 5:30 pm) @ Trottier Middle School, 49 Parkerville Rd: Performance of a short version of the musical comedy by kids enrolled in the Recreation program’s spring break camp run by Skyrise Theater. Admission is $5 pp. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Southborough Genealogy Club (7:00 – 8:30 pm) @ Southborough Library: This is an informal group meeting where you can learn and share tips about resources for researching family history. This monthly event is free and open to the public. Bring your laptop, log into Ancestry.com, and join in! If you have questions, contact carol.colaianni@comcast.net.

Friday, April 19, 2019 (First night of Passover)

  • Fundraiser for ARHS post prom party (4:00 – 7:00 pm) @ Roche Bros. Westborough, 1100 Union St, Westborough: It is increasingly expensive to sponsor a safe, fun post-prom party for Algonquin students each year. To help raise funds for this year’s event, head to Roche Bros during fundraising hours and grocery shop for all the items you will need for your holiday weekend. Then hand in your receipt to the ARHS Post Prom party volunteer before you leave the store. Five percent of the receipts collected will be donated to the effort.

  • Easter Egg Hunt (10:30 am): Annual community event organized by Southborough Kindergroup. Pose with the Easter Bunny starting at 10:30 am. (Bring your own camera). The kids hunt for plastic eggs with candy inside begins promptly at 11:00 am. The venue will depend on the weather – so it’s still up in the air as of this Thursday. See dedicated post for details.
  • Digging Dinosaurs (11:00 am) @ Southborough Library, Children’s Room: Dinosaur adventures complement their scientific facts with a happy dose of humor. Dinosaur lovers of all ages will enjoy the colorful posters, Dinosaur Sign-Language and participation that keep the audience asking for MOOORE! This program is recommended for ages 4 and up.   • Chess program at Library (2:00 – 4:00 pm) @ Southborough Library: The Southborough Library is continuing its Saturday Chess program for players ages 12+ who are interested in learning beginner chess skills. It meets on Saturdays twice a month.

Easter, Sunday, April 21, 2019

  • Easter Sunrise Service (6:30 am @ Hopkinton State Park: The United Parishes of Southborough welcome everyone to participate in the Easter morning sunrise service at Hopkinton State Park on Sunday, April 21. The service starts at 6:30 am in the marina area of the park. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held at The First Community Church, 137 Southville Road.
