After a disappointing spring break, Algonquin varsity teams seemed to get their footing back last week. The school won all but four of the 17 varsity games/meets it competed in.
The triumphs include a big win by Boys Outdoor Track. The team was named Champions at the 42nd Annual District E Robert Duncan Invitational Relay Meet for Boys – Division I. You can read about that in the Telegram.
The paper also ran a profile last week on ARHS Boys Lacrosse’s Dom Russo who apparently “has a chance to eclipse 200 career points this spring”. You can read about him and his “Strong Stick” here.
But the paper’s big news in high school sports last week wasn’t about this season. Last Monday, the Telegram posted its Winter All-Star teams. Not surprisingly, several Gonk athletes made the cut with two listed as cream of the crop:
- Gymnastics – Gymnast of the Year Lizzy Debroczy, Freshman, All-around; Mia Gorman, Freshman, All-Around; Sarah Middleton, Junior, Floor/Vault/Beam; Tessa McAndrews, Senior, Vault/Bars; and Bryn Coghlin, Sophomore, Beam/Bars
- Boys Basketball – Player of the Year Alex Karaban, Freshman, Forward; and Nick Redden, Senior, Forward
- Girls Ice Hockey – Lana Pacific, Freshman, Goalie; Kerryn O’Connell, Sophomore, Forward; Amy MacGlashing, Junior, Forward
- Girls Skiing – Kaitlyn Desio, Sophomore and Rudy Utzschneider, Junior
- Boys Swimming – Ryan Murphy, Senior, Freestyle and Ray Cerro, Senior, Breaststroke, Freestyle
- Girls Swimming – Lizzie Meschisen, Junior, Diver and Taylor Moore, Junior, Freestyle
- Boys Indoor Track – Matthew Madamba, Senior, 300

Back to this season – here are the ARHS varsity games on tap for the week.
