Care package drives for the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have become a semi-annual tradition in Southborough. Last May, residents shipped a record 400 boxes containing 11,000 pounds of toothpaste, microwave popcorn, DVDs and more to 30,000 troops stationed overseas.
The latest drive — being held this weekend at the Senior Center — has a holiday theme. You can support the drive by doing any of the following:
- Purchase items on the shopping list and bring them to the Senior Center on Saturday or Sunday.
- Bring a bunch of cards with a note of thanks and encouragement. The care package drive organizers say the troops really appreciate receiving cards.
- Make a donation. Postage and purchased items are a significant expense. You can drop off a check made out to Care Packages For Troops.
- Give an hour or two of your time that weekend to help pack care packages.
The care package drive is being organized in part by Southborough resident Debbie Depp Wilson whose daughter Courtney is a second lieutenant in the 864th Engineer Battalion at Fort Lewis, WA, and will deploy to Afghanistan in April. The holiday drive will support many of Courtney’s friends in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“They tell us that we can never truly know how deeply touched they are by your generosity,” Debbie wrote in an email to supporters.
The care package drive takes place on Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Senior Center (9 Cordaville Road).
