This week in sports

The season’s barely begun, but Algonquin Field Hockey is clearly on a roll.

Yesterday, the undefeated girls won their 5th game, shutting out opponents for the third time this season.

Girls Volleyball is also doing fine with a 4-0 record (three of them with 3-0 scores). Two sisters on the team scored some great coverage from Wicked Local:

The Chiota sisters combined for 19 kills and six aces as Algonquin volleyball swept Mid-Wach League rival Westborough on Tuesday.

Olivia Chiota recorded 12 kills and four aces as Algonquin girls volleyball (2-0, 2-0 MWL) swept Midland-Wachusett League rival Westborough (2-1, 1-1 MWL) 25-18, 25-22 and 25-22 Tuesday night.

Olivia’s sister, Chloe Chiota, recorded seven kills and two aces and Sydney Cerro had nine kills and one ace.

“It’s a really good win for us and a really good way to begin the year against a tough team,” Algonquin coach Janice Henningson said. “I’m pretty pumped about it.”

Soccer and Golf have had less even starts with wins offset by some losses/ties. (Boys Soccer 2-1-1, Girls Soccer 1-0-2, and Golf 2-3-1.)

The Golf team was covered by Wicked Local with a spotlight on junior Sam Hill, who also plays on a fall travel Baseball team. His coach, alum Michael Groccia, played the same sports and recognizes the challenge that can cause:

“I understand his swing and I understand the thought process,” said Groccia, whose team fell to 2-2-1 (1-1-1 MW). “I know the baseball swing and I know the golf swing and what I’ve learned since then about the golf swing that interacts and conflicts with the baseball swing. I try to just impart on him what I did once I stopped playing baseball and got my golf swing to be a good solid golf swing and get out some of the mechanics of a baseball swing.

“I just share with him my own personal experience with it and give him little swing tips that I use in my everyday game because golf doesn’t mess up a baseball swing, a baseball swing messes up your golf swing.”

THawks Football’s season start on Friday night was a disappointment. ARHS lost at Doherty 19-8. The Telegram reports:

“I thought our team played well, they never quit, and they showed great effort against a great Doherty team,” Algonquin coach Taylor Allen said. “Our guys made some plays when they needed to — they just didn’t make enough of them. We just have to execute better.”

This Friday, the team will host its first home game of the season. (Due to the EEE threat, that kicks off in the afternoon to end before dusk.)

The Telegram’s football coverage of a former THawks teammate from Southborough was more upbeat. ARHS grad Jack Gerulskis was sidelined from WPI Football by an elbow injury last year. He’s back on the field this fall. You can read about him here.

This week, Algonquin’s Cross Country teams are headed to some invitationals this week. According to the Telegram, we should keep an eye on junior Kaitlyn Desio’s performance. The paper named her one of the top five girl runners in Central MA to watch this season:

Desio missed last year’s All-State championship, not because of injury, but because she was out-of-town the day of the meet. Desio, who is the Tomahawks’ No. 1 harrier now that Tess Reyes (Cornell) has graduated, placed ninth at last November’s Central Mass. Division 1 Championships in 19:52. The standout all-star skier posted a personal best 19:49.23 earlier last fall at the twilight meet.

“She’s always smiling,” Algonquin coach Pat Galvin said. “She comes to practice in a great mood and even more excited to work. She looks forward to being the No. 1 runner on the team. She’s looking forward to stepping up into the No. 1 role. She follows the team motto, ‘positive vibes, negative splits.’ She’s got a serious engine. She can just hum along at a pretty good clip for a fair amount of time.“

Galvin said Desio, who has run an 11:18.56 in the 2-mile in outdoor track, has a legitimate chance of cracking the top three at the CMass championship, followed by a strong showing showing at All-State.
