It’s time to check in again with the Southborough Fire Department. It appears it hasn’t been a quiet summer.
Emergency Responses
The following are just the incidents SFD shared on Facebook since my last coverage earlier this month.
Fire Crews from Southborough and the Marlborough Fire Department contained a quick moving grass and woods fire along the Sudbury Reservoir Trail to under a ½ acre yesterday, Sunday, August 23rd.
Engine 23 and Ambulance 29 responded to a serious motor vehicle crash this afternoon on Marlborough Road. A Brewster ambulance was requested by the fire incident commander. Both the driver and passenger were transported to the hospital.
Not all of the work SFD members do is local. Again, Southborough Emergency Management’s Neal Aspesi answered a call to help in a distant area of our nation that needs reinforcements.
Lt. Neal Aspesi has been activated by the Massachusetts Task Force 1 (MA-TF1) Urban Search and Rescue Team, one of 28 national teams under the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The team of 45 members left their Beverly, MA base early Thursday morning, traveling to the Gulf Coast to assist residents affected by the aftermath of Hurricane Laura. This is the fourth time in as many years that Neal has been activated. Best of luck to Neal and the entire team from Massachusetts. Stay safe!
Preparing for future emergencies
Of course, the SFD also spends time preparing to be on their game when emergencies pop up. Below are two examples they shared this summer.
Today, members of Group 4 were on site when Life Flight re-evaluated one of the landing zones in town located at the Mary Finn School. Life Flight has transported more than 27,000 patients since its founding in 1982 and is based at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. Their team is an important resource to members of our community, and many others, in case a serious medical emergency requires air transport.
As part of their August training, members of Southborough Fire Department renewed their required CPR certifications. Training modifications made due to the COVID-19 pandemic mean smaller classes, more video and conversation based education rather than hands on with a manikin.

The SFD shared its condolences to the family and friends of a former member who recently passed away, John Mauro, Sr.
