Flags in Southborough and across the state are already flying at half staff until sunset today. Under orders from Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker they will be lowered again tomorrow, Saturday, September 5, 2020 in honor of U.S. Army Sergeant Elder Fernandes. Sergeant Fernandes was a member of the 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, and a native of Brockton, Massachusetts, who passed away in August. He will be laid to rest at the Melrose Cemetery in Brockton, Massachusetts on Saturday.
Sgt Fernandes death has been in headlines as one of several tragic deaths of soldiers stationed at Fort Hood over the past year. His family is calling for an independent investigation.
