As I posted earlier this week, 8th seed Girls Volleyball earned a BYE for the preliminary round of MIAA Division 1 State Championships. They played 25th seed Lexington in the “Round of 32” teams on Wednesday. The Gonk Girls triumphed 3-0, cuing them up for the next round. They’ll host 9th seed Barnstable in the Round of 16 on Tuesday, November 9 at 5:00 pm. (For info on attending the competitions, scroll down.)
Both Gonk Soccer teams enter their state tourneys on Saturday.
Reporting on Girls Soccer feels a bit déjà vu. That team is also 8th seed with a BYE on preliminary’s and matched up to 25th seed competitors for the Round of 3. They’ll play Lincoln-Sudbury at 5:00 pm on the 6th. (Let’s hope for similar results!)
Algonqiuin Boys are 12th seed with a BYE on prelims. They’ll play 21st seed Acton-Boxborough at 7:00 pm on the 6th.
Both soccer teams will play on Algonquin’s field. In case you were wondering based on some recent media reports, the school’s football field is in playing condition.
For those who missed the news, the night after Marlborough lost to Algonquin on October 22nd, a Marlborough student allegedly drove on the field. It was not the most discreet crime. The teen purportedly posted a video of him in action on instagram, taunting Algonquin. The alleged driver is being summoned to juvenile court among other consequences.
ARHS Principal Sean Bevan emailed last week:
I am writing to respond to inquiries I’ve received about an incident we experienced over the weekend: a student from a neighboring school drove their vehicle on our football field on Saturday night, causing some damage to the grass. The individual responsible was identified almost immediately, and I have begun working with the Northborough PD and the principal of the individual’s school to determine how to proceed, including recouping the cost of the repairs, which began immediately. The field is playable for today’s soccer matches, and we have redoubled our efforts at securing the facility to prevent an issue like this from happening again.
We are fortunate to have a wonderful facility, so it was disappointing to see it treated with disrespect. However, I am satisfied both with the immediate and serious responses from both the NPD and my colleagues at the responsible student’s school.
As I previously posted, Football has a non-playoff game at 7:00 pm tonight. They’re heading to Nashoba’s field.
As I posted mid-week, Boys and Girls Cross Country head to their Mid Wach League Championships in Gardener on Saturday. (Those are listed as 11:00 am at Gardner Municipal Golf Course). And Cheerleading heads to its League Championship at Shepherd Hill this Sunday.
As for the MIAA competitions coming up, an email from the school this week shared info that relates to Volleyball’s competition. It will only apply to Soccer teams if they win this Saturday.:
