The weekend might have marked the end of the road for Algonquin teams competing in post-season tournaments. (One team is still waiting to hear.)
On Saturday, ARHS Girls Soccer challenged undefeated Hingham High in the state playoffs’ Round of 8. They were shutout 0-3. (You can watch their final game of the season here.)
They can still feel pride as the Gonk team to make it the furthest in the state brackets this fall.
In non-bracket competitions. . .
ARHS Cross Country competed in State Division 1B tournaments the same day. The Girls came in 13th out of 23 teams and the Boys 21st out of 25.
The teams didn’t qualify to compete at the upcoming Division 1 championships, but one individual runner does – Olivia Guckian. The sophomore came in 34th out of 155 runners.
The Performance Cheer squad competed in their Regionals on Sunday. The girls didn’t score highly enough to automatically qualify for the state championships this weekend. However, they still have a shot to at a bid and are waiting to hear.
Gonk Football didn’t make the championship playoffs this fall. (The Community Advocate recently covered the team’s frustration over the new MIAA system this year.)
On Staturday, the boys lost their final non-playoff matchup (19-46 to Fitchburg).
There is still a chance for them to go out on a high note this fall – the big annual Thanksgiving Day game. They’ll play Westborough at 10:00 am that morning on their rivals’ turf.
