Northborough-Southborough Public Schools is inviting parents to a special “Keynote” in two weeks. The free talk will be given by Southborough parent and author Jennifer De Leon.
As I’ve previously covered, De Leon is the author of a young adult novel and a book of non-fiction essays.
The novel, “Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From”, was informed by De Leon’s experience growing up as one of the few students of color in her Framingham High classrooms. In “White Space: Essays on Culture, Race, & Writing”, De Leon wrote about her personal experiences as a Guatemalan-American woman exploring her roots as an adult.
NSBORO promotes that De Leon will speak about the power of stories as part of a wider initiative by the combined districts:
She will share her own amazing story with reflections from her books DON’T ASK ME WHERE I’M FROM and WHITE SPACE. This event will kick off a new NSBORO-wide personal story sharing project.
The program is sponsored by NSBORO’s Coalition for Equity.
In last Friday’s weekly update from Superintendent Gregory Martineau, he explained:
The keynote event will kick off a new Northborough-Southborough personal storytelling project. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work with Jennifer over the next several months in preparation for an event in October or November called, Northborough-Southborough Stories on the Stage. The District is excited to welcome Jennifer to the Coalition’s work of providing opportunities for the community to learn, connect, and engage with each other.
The Keynote will be held in Trottier Middle School’s auditorium (49 Parkerville Road) on Thursday, April 7th at 7:00 pm.
NSBORO is asking attendees to RSVP here. (It’s not required to attend, but the headcount will help them prepare.)
