Titans racked up tourney triumphs over the break

As I previewed last week, Algonquin athletes were slated to compete in a slew of tournaments over the holiday break. Here’s an update on how those played out (and what’s on tap for this week). Spoiler alert, there were more wins than losses!

Boys Hockey got its turn in the media limelight by taking home the Daily News Cup. The team beat Marlborough 5-3 in the final game last Wednesday.

Titans Girls Hockey Medway Cup win tweeted by ARHSAthleticsGirls Ice Hockey players had their own reasons to celebrate last week. On Thursday and Friday, the co-op team competed in the Medway Holiday Tournament. The Titans beat Natick 3-1 in the Thursday “semi-finals” then shut out host Medway’s co-op team 3-0 in Friday’s Final to win the title.

Last week, Wrestling competed in the Lowell Holiday Tournament. According to ARHS Athletics’ tweet the event pulled in competitors from 89 teams from all 6 New England states. That highlights the impressiveness of Titan’s Rafael Knapp’s results. He took 1st place in the 170lb weight class, making him the first Gonk student to win a championship title at the annual event.

At Mass State Track Coaches Association’s annual Distance Classic, ARHS’ Joseph Lamburn won 1st place for the Boys 2 Mile Run with Aiden Ruiz in 3rd place. Christopher Kardos placed 3rd in the 1000 Meter Run and Jonah Gould 4th in the 800 Meter. Together, the four teammates also won the Boys Distance Medley. In the Girls’ events, Shiela Purcell came in 4th place for the 1000 Meter Run, while her twin Brigid finished 5th place for the Girls’ 1 Mile. Boston Herald posted photo highlights from the event here. (You can find the full competition results here.)

Earlier in the week, Girls Basketball played the home team in the first round of Hopkinton’s 1st annual Mary Korbey Invitational. They won 51-43. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to outscore Westborough in the 54-57 championship game on Thursday.
