Starting next week, artists can submit proposals to be part of 2023 Art on the Trails. This will be the 7th annual exhibit at Beals Preserve.
This year’s theme will be “Transformation”.
Merriam Webster dictionary defines transformation as an act, process, or instance of transforming or being transformed, as to change in composition or structure, in the outward form or appearance of or to change in character or condition.
Artists are being asked to consider what transformation means to them and propose an art installation project that reflects their interpretation. Consider transformation in nature, culture, or art. How might your work transform over time in the environment? Can you engage the visitor in that transformation?
We welcome all interpretations of this concept, in all materials.
As always, the art on the Southborough Open Land Foundation’s preserve must leave no permanent trace to the environment and be installed without harm to surrounding trees or vegetation.
For the third year, each selected artist will receive a $100 stipend, thanks to support of the Southborough Community Fund.
The juror for this year’s exhibition is Sarah Alexander, Director of Visual Arts for Hopkinton Center for the Arts. (You can read more about her here.)
The window for submissions is February 15th – April 15th. Selections will be announced on May 1st. Works will be installed by artists on June 10th to be on display through September 17th.
Those interested in potentially applying can request a guided tour of the site.
If you’re feeling inspired, or think you know someone who might be, you can check out the website here and the full submission guidelines here. (You can also look at past coverage and photos on the blog here.)
Each year, the exhibit is also used to inspire poetry. Stay tuned for news on a Call for Poetry later this summer.
In the meantime, you can buy the chapbook of poetry inspired by last year’s exhibit here.
