Today, Algonquin Regional High School was among those that were targeted by a “swatting hoax”. A message from the Superintendent assures that students are safe.
According to the message, the Northborough Police are on-site. (Shortly after the 12:12 pm email, one of my children texted there were “so many” officers on campus.)
A story by NBC Boston states:
Massachusetts State Police said they are aware of 28 communities that received unfounded “swatting” calls on Tuesday, including multiple calls to school districts in the western and southeastern parts of the state.
Below is the message that was sent to parents and guardians:
The Northborough Police Department received a phone call moments ago that referred to a possible active shooter at Algonquin Regional High School. Everyone is safe. The Northborough Police Department is on-site and will remain on-site this afternoon. The police have assessed the situation as a hoax, and the building is clear.
Several other area communities received the same call this morning. Over the last several weeks, there have been numerous reports of schools in Massachusetts receiving phone calls with these threats, all of which have been unsubstantiated.
The District understands the anxiety a situation like this can cause for families, students, staff, and the community. The District’s top priority is the safety and well-being of students and staff. It takes any and all reports of potential threats seriously and is making every effort to maintain an environment where students and staff feel safe.
Parents and students are encouraged to continue to report anything that could threaten school safety. As always, the District will continue to work closely with local law enforcement to assist in these situations.
