A recent walk around my neighborhood revealed many familiar signs of spring starting to emerge, along with some unfamiliar ones, too.
First the familiar. An early daffodil.
And my favorite herald of spring, a crocus.
And then there was this fascinating guy growing alongside a creek.
And another a short distance away.
So, help me out. What are they?
Pics #3 and 4 are Skunk Cabbage.

The last two look like skunk cabbage. The landscape of next to water sounds like the skunk cabbage’s home. If you crush them, they stink very bad, hence the name skunk cabbage
Susan, I believe the last two photos are skunk cabbage which is quite prolific in swampy areas.
Skunk Cabbage! I did a quick google image search (“skunk cabbage plant massachusetts”) and came up with a link to a southboroughnews link from 2008. :)
I stepped away from my computer for a bit and came back to find all your responses waiting to be published. I knew you’d all have the answer – much more fun than Google.
Skunk cabbage. It may be stinky stuff, but I love the way it looks!
