It’s time for an update on Algonquin post-season sports.
Two more ARHS teams fell out of playoffs. But two teams are continuing to compete in championship tourneys and another will still hit the field for consolation games.
For the second straight year, Titans Field Hockey fell out of the Division 1 state playoffs at the quarter finals. The difference this year, is the #3 team was defeated by underdogs.
Algonquin hosted #11 Winchester on Saturday. The Community Advocate covered Gonk’s 2-1 loss:
Although the Titans had more corners than their opponent – by a 14-3 margin – the ball didn’t roll the team’s way, and two Winchester goals within the game’s first 18 minutes were enough to end Algonquin’s season.
Algonquin’s lone goal was scored by Lindsey Brown.
“I just thank them for the effort they put in all season. The positivity, fighting through the last five minutes, and not giving up. We had free hits inside the 25-yard-line, penalty corners. They didn’t give up,” said Algonquin Head Coach Dan Welty.

Today, Metrowest Daily News reported that two members of the team will play in Massachusetts High School Field Hockey Coaches Association’s Senior All Star game in Grafton this Sunday. Brown and Meredith Wu will play for Team Orange at noon.
Gonk Football also fell out of its playoffs over the weekend. On Friday night, the #9 Titans lost 39-7 to #8 Bridgewater-Raynham Trojans in the Round of 16.
From reading the Taunton Daily Gazette’s coverage, it seems the Trojans may have been even stiffer competition than their power ranking indicated. A key player for the Trojans had been out of commission with hamstring injury earlier in the season. After his return:
[senior wide receiver Jayson] Kelleher found himself at the heart of the B-R (6-3) passing game, hauling in five touchdowns during the Trojans’ six-game winning streak. Also a kicker, he sent the extra point through the uprights on two of his three touchdowns against the Titans and has been a vital part of his team’s kick returns, especially on punts.

That doesn’t mean the Titans team is done playing this fall. They are now slated for a non-playoff vs St. John’s this Friday at 6:00 pm at home. (Click here to buy tickets.)
This weekend, the team’s cheerleaders will focus on their own championship tourney. ARHS Varsity Cheer will compete at Regionals in Marlborough. (Click here for the details.)
I had inaccurately reported that Cross Country was competing at their State Championships last Saturday. Those were actually the State Divisional Championships.
The Boys came in at #6 for Division 1C. (You can view detailed results here.) The Girls came in #14 for Division 1B. (You can view detailed results here.)
Now, ten members of the Boys team will continue on to compete in the Central Division 1 State Meet of Champions this Saturday at Fort Devens. (Click here for those details.)
